Zeiss Mark one primes

I have four Mark one zeiss prime lenses for 16mm film. All t1.3 so would be ideal for this camera. I would be cropping for 2.35. I'm pretty sure the 25mm 16mm and probably 12mm will cover the sensor But I could be wrong. Not sure about the 9.5mm Does anyone know or done tests with these lenses as the rear glass is a lot bigger than most 16mm lenses?

There is pretty much no way that the 16 or 12 or 9.5 will come anywhere close to covering the sensor. You're talking about lenses that were designed to cover a 10mm wide frame, and using them on a camera that has an 18mm wide frame. Those three lenses will almost certainly result in huge, huge black vignetting and whole chunks of the sides of the frame being cut off.

The 25mm might come somewhere close to covering, if it's anything like other 16mm lenses I've tried on the AF100. The edges and corners would probably be horribly soft, but if you're cropping to 2.35 you might be able to snip the worst parts off.

For reference, instead of 16mm lenses, this is what a Super16 lens looks like on the AF100:
AF100-S16-Chart.jpg

Now, again, that's a Super16 lens. A 16mm lens would show substantially more vignetting. Keep in mind the AF100's sensor is over 3x larger than 16mm film(!)

I don't have the Zeiss Mark 1's, but I have three of the Cinema Products Ultra T lenses, which are T1.3 and were made to compete against the Zeiss. I have the 25mm, 16mm, and 9mm. And I can say that the 9 and 16 don't come anywhere close to covering the sensor, and the 25mm almost does. Almost. It's quite close. So I would presume, given that these are comparable-technology lenses designed to compete against each other, that the results would be pretty indicative of what you're going to get with yours.

Hi Barry

I've measured the rear diameters of the lenses All are different but the Zeiss mark ones are large compared to others

25mm Dia 20mm
16mm Dia 19mm
12mm Dia 17mm
9.5mm Dia 16mm

Shouldn't these cover?

Best,

Mark

The AF100's image circle is 22mm. I doubt any of those lenses, with the possible exception of the 25mm, will cover the frame.

to be exact the S16 frame that these lenses cover 9.5 through 25 is 12.5mm x 7.5mm with the diagonal of 14.6mm. Not quite 22mm of M43 but I think that 16:9 M43 is less since it's a crop of a 3:2aspect ratio frame and the 2.35:1 will be even smaller. I doubt the wides will work since there is still a significant gap...
Bottom line the'll (wide ones) cover up to about 14mm wide frame max....

The image circle for a 2.35:1 extraction would involve a 17.8 x 7.6 frame size, requiring a 19.44mm image circle.

Bottom line, 16mm lenses, especially wide-angle lenses, simply will not cover. Telephoto lenses usually cover a bigger circle, so lenses with a focal length of 35mm or more probably will cover. 30mm may. 25mm, some do and some don't. Haven't found any lenses wider than 25mm that cover the sensor.

Would I be right in thinking the sensor size is 17.3 x13 ? Just trying to work out how much you'd have to reframe to get rid of the pesky vignetting.

Sorry Barry missed your post.
So then the 25mm and 16mm are both likely to cover The 12mm would need reframing and the 9.5 a LOT!

No, the sensor is 17.8 x 10.

You'd have to crop out a 10 x 7.5 section out of the center to be truly free of vignetting, because that's all the surface area that 16mm film lenses were designed to cover. Now, different lenses may cover different areas, but all of them are designed to cover at least 10 x 7.5; that's the size of a frame of 16mm film.

And a 10 x 7.5 section out of the center is going to result in standard-def with 16mm DOF.

If all you need is standard-def footage, and 16mm DOF is okay, then it's practical to do it. But if you want the full 35mm film-style shallow DOF and HD footage, then 16mm movie camera lenses simply aren't going to do the job.

Barry- not to quibble but all Arri primes 9.5 and up cover Super 16 frame- that's 12.5 x 7.5mm. I've projected them numerous times over the years. Only the 8mm Arri for 16mm does not cover Super 16 frame. Not to be confused with the exotic 8R for 35mm.
And not that it would change anything related to the OP subject- sorry to derail slightly- back to topic....

Would these lenses work on a GH2 in ETC mode at 2.6x crop factor with no vignetting? 9mm Zeiss becoming 23.4 mm?

Would these lenses work on a GH2 in ETC mode at 2.6x crop factor with no vignetting? 9mm Zeiss becoming 23.4 mm?

Certainly. The crop mode on the GH2 is about the size of a 1/2" video camera sensor, and 16mm movie lenses cover a frame that's bigger than a 2/3" video camera sensor, so any and all 16mm movie lenses will fully cover the GH2's ETC mode.
