Zeiss C/Y 35-70mm f3.4 REAL focal lengths?

I thought I would ask this here, knowing that C/Y glass is pretty well-loved with the NEX cameras.

I was super excited to finally get my Metabones adapter for my brand new 35-70mm lens I got a few days ago. I ripped open the packaging and put the lens and the adapter on, and I love the look of the lens, but I was dismayed to find that the zoom was barely noticeable. In other words, the difference between 35 and 70 was not nearly as much as I could "remember" from other zooms I've used.

I put the lens up to my 5D Mark III for an impromptu test, and I found that 35mm on the Zeiss is slightly cropped, compared to 35mm on the 5D Mark III. And 70mm on the Zeiss is more like 55mm on the 5D. What is going on??

At first I thought it may be a flange-distance issue because of the adapter, but the focus marks seem to be dead on, and infinity and close focus are fine; so I'm guessing that's not the issue. The A7s and 5D sensors are almost identically sized (0.2mm difference); that's not the issue.

Does anyone know? Did I get a bad lens?

I've had that lens in the past, it's only a 2:1 zoom so it's not really a huge range anyway. What other lenses can you compare with? It seems odd that 70 looks like 55, that doesn't sound right.

Is this the lens which has the macro setting? I wonder if it's possible to get a bad lens like this?

cheers
Paul
