Zebra pattern?

I shot football games over the weekend and noticed there was a colored zebra pattern on the roof of the concession stand. I have also seen this in previous footage on a fence and bleachers. This is a wavy pattern. I will try to attach a picture that I took from the tv with my digital cam. It is blurry but you can still see the pattern. I used manual iris controls with zebra on. No idea what to do to keep this from happening. Any suggestions on how to fix in post would be much appreciated. I need to get these games edited soon.

I believe what you are seeing is called moire. You will see it on TV sometimes too, for example if somebody is wearing clothing with a certain fine pattern for a few seconds a strange colored pattern might appear/disappear as they move. I've never noticed it an actual movie theater. I don't know if it occurs with a progressive display, or only on interlaced. But it's common in digital imaging.

As far as getting rid of it, I don't know how much can be done if it's an important part of your footage. If it's just in the background, you might be able to create a mask and blur it a little bit. I would just experiment with it.

Look for other posts with more info or do a web search for "moire."

Thanks for the advice. I don't think many parents will notice it even if I don't get it fixed. They will be too busy looking for their kid playing. I will see what my program will do to get rid of it and if not then I am not going to worry too much about it. Overall they are getting great footage of the games at a decent price.
