ZAXCOM FUSION vs TASCAM HSP82

Kinda like comparing a Chevrolet to a Lamborghini, isn't it?
The Zaxcom costs twice as much as the Tascam. They aren't
really in the same league, IMHO.

Of course you can compare the two recorders like cars, but there are a lot of options on more expensive gear that just isnt needed. Such as recording at 192 or recording two file formats at once. I am trying to distinguish if these features are practical, because Id prefer not to pay for options I wont use just to say I own a lamborghini.

Since you have revealed absolutely nothing about your needs or the kinds of things you produce, we can't really help you there, can we? Your complete question was: "Any opionions?" Not much to go on, is it?

I'm in love with the Tascam HSP82. I have one on loan for the next few days if you have any specific questions. So far, I can say it has ultra clean pre-amps, and a very snappy, intuitive touchscreen interface. Great limiters too!

Here is what the Tascam HSP82 sounds like with a few mics:

Awesome recorder, and mic demo. You know Guy, you can embed the Vimeo videos by copying only the numbers at the end of the video's URL, then hitting the "V" button of your message, then pasting in the numbers between the brackets. It took me a few tries to figure that out. It's better than YouTube and the video is properly displayed without having to select "I Agree" to see it.

Thanks for the tip Chad. The Vimeo version seems to be a bit choppy. Is it for you too? Now if I could only play guitar and sing we'd have a helluva demo :2vrolijk_08:

Any more HS-p82 users? Comments? How do the pres compare with Sound Devices 788t - or Zaxcom, etc?

tascam hs-p82

tascam hs-p82

Anyone using the Tascam HS-p82 that can comment on the pres as well as the comparisons - also - where to buy? (forgot to mention that above)

any of the major audio resellers will have it, trew and b&h to name some. the benefit i see of the fusion over the hsp82 is its size, weight and media. the fusion is pretty small and lighter than a 788 so it can easily fit in a pegz2 bag. and also there's the zaxnet which some users will find very important.

but if it were a cart based setup, i think i'd be psyched on a the hsp82 with its breakout fader box(RC-F82). on paper it looks to be a great unit.

but they both record to 2 CF slots for redundancy, which is pretty sweet.

If the Tascam has anywhere near the sonic quality of the Zaxcom - then it is an obvious choice for me (though the loss of a couple tracks).
THANKS.

If you live near an audio dealer, you could compare them side by side. It's also a matter of budget. Can you get the fusion? If you can then get it. It may have options you don't need right now, but you also have to think about the future. I know from extensive personal experience that the zaxcom stuff sounds great. The thing I've always liked about Zaxcom is that they aren't a huge company, and they are specifically dedicated to production sound, just like sound devices. Companies like that tend to support their products really well because their livelihoods depends on that.

On a side note...Guy, I really like that shockmount you used for the Sanken CS3e. :)

One last question. Can two of the tascam hs-p82s be linked together for 16 tracks? If linked to an external clock it seems feasible (though lining up the tracks might be a pain.)
Best,

Zaxcom is the industry standard. Tascam is not.

Flip but not quite accurate, and actually OT. Which industry? Big budget narrative films out of Hollywood, or Doc's, or Narrative films anywhere else in the world, or low budget films, or say event videography. I'm not even sure it's true for the big budget films out of Hollywood. Not so long ago you could have said Nagra and been right but I think it's a lot more diversified right now. Tascam is probably a very small or nonexistent slice, for big budget Hollywood narrative films. But it is much more widely used in the rest of the "industries".

To the OP. Do you have $10K for a recorder set aside (taxes and accessories, etc.)? If so and you work at that level go for it. I could be way off base here but I suspect that IF you really need the Zaxom you wouldn't need to be asking on DVX User. Not that we are low rent idiots but IF you don't KNOW you need an $8 grand recorder, then you probably don't need it.

Zaxcom is definitely an innovator, and maybe for the really high end guys they could be considered the industry standard, but that's a small group. I think for a majority of people the Tascam machine can be a very viable option. I personally haven't used it, so I can't really comment on it, but it looks cool. And that control surface for it...that is very interesting. I would really be interested in seeing someone do a side by side comparison of the tascam setup with it's control surface, and a Fusion with the mix12 control surface.

I should also say that my previous post was not meant to say that Tascam doesn't support their products well. Back in my Coffey Sound days, I never had any service/support issues with them, and I remember their rep was always really cool with me.
