Sounds like you need a 35mm f/1.4

I've been using a steadytracker and I'm really pleased with it for handheld work, no more rolling shutter or jello. I bought the ultralite version then picked up an extreme cheap on ebay. It's light enough to not give you a sore shoulder and really fast and easy to balance. As it kinda looks like a monopd it's still pretty stealthy. I'm getting some LCD glasses for run and gun focusing. I was going to get a shoulder rig but don't see a need for it now. I'm selling the steadytracker ultralite cheap, if anyone is interested msg me. http://www.steadytracker.com/steady5.html

okay, then at this point I'd like to mention... i'm using manual lenses. :)

By manual you mean manual focus? Like, anything that's not AF, like AI or AI-S?
Like this one?

I'm a newbie trying to find the best lens to shoot video. I have a 50mm 1.8 but as Andrew Brinkhaus said, you cannot enter LV unless you set the aperture to f22.

yup, just like that one. i have a 28mm f/2.0 that i shoot virtually everything with.

I'd like to buy that lense myself. May I ask which one you've got, the AI or AI-S? I saw your short model/photographer and I find it aesthetically wonderful! Did you use your 28mm lense throughout the movie?

What do you guys consider a good deal on Ebay for the 28mm f/2.0 AI-S (in good condition of course)?

Thanks for your reply Zak!

And of course lens is spelled without an "e" at the end. English is not my native language...

Mine is an ai, optically they are pretty much the same. The focus ring is more damped on the ai-s. they have been selling for 200-385 US on ebay over the past few months. So 250-300 would be reasonable. The 28mm f/2.8 is a bit slower but optically superior. I had both and chose the speed of the f/2 I didn't really notice the difference optically but I could tell which lens could shoot in the dark.

Squig, how does the 24mm f/2.0 AIS compare optically to the 28mm f/2.0 AIS? It is a bit shorter of a lens; worth the extra bucks? I've read the Ken Rockwell reviews, but was wondering if anyone here had real experience with the 24mm.

I haven't used one personally but there is a review of it here http://www.naturfotograf.com/lens_wide.html

I just picked up a 24 f/2.8 which gets much better reviews but I might get an F/2 and give it a go soon. I think photographers are a lot more critical than we need to be with our images moving at 24fps but some cinematographers here might disagree.

They are definitely more critical is some respects, since i am both. ;-) Flare for example isn't as bad in video in my opinion, it can even give some extra depth, and the smaller frame makes falloff and corner softness less of an issue. I love the 24/2 but it's definitely better stopped down a bit. And it does flare a lot. Not the cool photoshopped flare we all love (it has that too) but a huge white blob washing out the entire frame, the kind i love but to each his own. :-)

Do you use any custom curves? Any special contrast settings to otherwise flatten the image to keep more detail for post (and maybe force the compression algorithm to give you more bits)? What are your camera sharpness settings?

Your stuff looks great--but you have never discussed whether any special camera settings are part of your workflow.

if that is addressd to me... no. i don't do any customs curves. I play with the white balance in-camera to achieve the look I want. and any adjustments I make in post (I use Color) are minimal.
