GH4 Zacuto EVF not working?

Hi

im trying to get my Zacuto EVF to display an image out of my GH4. I didn't think it would be that difficult! Appreciate some assistance to the settings.

Mine works by just plugging it in. Make sure you aren't sending a 4K image out of HDMI. Check another monitor too. Hope your port is okay.

FWIW-

I just tried to do the same thing. The Zacuto EVF apparently does not work with the GH4 in any other frame rate other than 24P. I get an "unsupported format 1080 yuv422" or something to that effect. I'm going to email Zacuto to see if there is a firmware update or work around on the way.

Update-

I just checked the Zacuto faq page for the EVF. Looks like there is no solution. grrr.

" Q: I am getting an “unsupported video format 1080p50-YUV422” message when using the Panasonic Lumix GH4 and the EVF. How do I fix this?

A: The EVF will work with any 1080p24, 1080i50/60, and 720p25/30 setting. You will need to change the HDMI output to one of these signals for the EVF to read it. The 4k format at 24fps will also work. The two formats in this category are 4096×2160@24p, and 3840×2160@24p. Any other recording formats not listed, will produce an “unsupported video format 1080p50-YUV422” error message on the EVF. Alternately, if you are recording in 4k and using a separate 4k recorder, a possible alternative is to use the loop through of the recorder to into the EVF instead of going directly from the camera. It usually converts the signal into something the EVF can read. We haven’t done any testing on this; it is just a brain-storming suggestion from one of our designers. 1080p25/30 will not work while recording. This is due to the GH4 “wrapping” the signal and converting 25 to 50 and 30 to 60, thus turning 1080p25/30 into 1080p50/60. However, if you record at 1080p25/30 and then view your footage via playback mode of the GH4, the EVF should be able to display the image. It just can’t do it while recording. Any other recording formats not listed above, with 1080p50/60 being the most popular, will produce an “unsupported video format 1080p50-YUV422” error message on the EVF. If you continue to have problems please email customer support at sales@zacuto.com"

Hi, thank you for your research. I thought I was going mad. So for all those in PAL land the Zacuto EVF is useless. Why the hell would you use an EVF for playback viewing!!! And if you are using an external recorder then you would probably be using the new Shogun, similarly you wouldn't bother with the Zacuto. Haven't they got a new EVF now so probably not bothering to support the old one any more!

Should be a firmware upgrade this month from Panasonic
that should sort the hdmi 50/60p output problem

Let this be so. Where did you hear about this aspect of the firmware upgrade ? Any links you might be able to share? Thanks!

I'm also struggling a lot with the HDMI output. I can't use my Zacuto EVF anymore and my LCD's in my studio won't work anymore. I've send a mail to Zacuto, this was their answer:

Hi Jordy,
Thank you for your email. You are indeed not the first person to inquire about this. Unfortunately, I have very little additional information to provide other than what Laura has already told you. We are working on fixing this issue with a firmware update, but that is still an ongoing process for which I don't have an estimated release date.

Although I hate to do so, if you are dead set on using 1080p50 at this time, I recommend you use a different EVF. I apologize for the inconvenience this is causing you. If you have any other questions or problems with the EVF and GH4 please don't hesitate to ask.

Thank you,

Subject: Zacuto EVF Issue

Hello Rob,

I've started a post on Facebook and Laura gave me your email address.

About half a year ago, I bought the Zacuto EVF Pro for my Canon 5D2. It worked great and I love the product.
But since that camera was getting a little old, I bought the new Lumix GH4. A great camera, but unfortunately the EVF doesn't work on it.

You might be familiar with the issue that an HDMI 1080p50 signal is not supported. I'm aware of what it can support (4k, etc.) and that we can fix this through a diffrent HDMI loopthrough device. But unfortunately, that's not my workflow. I love the small compact size of the DSLR, with only the EVF attached onto it. Since the GH4 can record 1080p at 50 fps, I also love to work that way and recording it internally on the SD.

Now, my question goes as following: is there any talk about fixing this issue through a firmware update? I'm sure I'm not the only one who'd like to shoot in this workflow. If there aren't any future plans to this, I must sell the EVF and get one that does support the signal as this is very important to me.

I'm looking forward to your reply.

Best regards,
Jordy

I was thinking to look for an HDMI downconverter, but I don't like the extra thing hanging near my camera. Anyone knows a very small converter? Best thing so far I found is this one: http://www.atlona.com/HD550.html
