Zacuto announces the "Gratical Eye"

Didn't they show the concept for this in '14(after the original Gratical) or '15? I do like the size/design much better than the original, though. But the SDI out is a necessity more than half the time when I use it on my C300.

Good timing. Looking at alternate EVF options for Varicam LT. The LT EVF is top of the line, and is fantastic. However one thing Im not a big fan of on the LT is the rod system for the EVF, would prefer to leave that at home. It works well, however gets in the way for lens mount changes. Not that you would be doing that everyday but add the cost difference between this and the Varicam EVF...

Features look great, size looks even better, and the price seems fair. I'm going to wait till NAB to see if anyone else releases anything similar, but if not I definitely think I'll be picking one of these up.

To pair with your F5?

Looks good. I would probably have picked one up to replace the dreadful stock one in my FS7. But I just sold it, finally.

I wouldn't pair it with the F5, the Sony OLED is too nice to take a loss on just to move to a Gratical. Plus I just sold my F5, so I'll most likely need something for whatever I move on to next.

What are you considering?
Obviously the Varicam.
Are you waiting to see what will be announced at NAB?

I'm considering everything at the moment. Not really swaying one way or another, just going to rent for the time being and see what happens. I'll probably either go super cheap (used F3 or F35) or spend all the monies and move to Alexa. I'm very wary of the middle-ground of cameras at the moment - they're the hardest things to pay of in a lot of ways.

So I think having something that's either cheap enough that it doesn't need to pay for itself, or something fancy enough that producers will pay for it is probably the way to go.

It's shocking how cheap F3s are selling for. Not a bad plan at all. :)

On the stills camera front, I just bought a 5d "classic" or Mark I for 350 bucks for the same reason (still a killer bit of gear for a significantly reduced price). Full frame cam with 35 F2, 50 F1.8, 85 F1.8 all for less than 800 bucks. DDAAANG!!!

Back to your Sony F3, 2000-2500 easy. YIKES! Congrats to us all....

The Australian dollar is creeping back up, so good time to be looking.
What gigs do you mainly do?
Also, why did you sell your F5 if you are looking at a used F3 or F35?

I don't rightly understand why people are bothering to part with them for such low prices, but it sure does make it a buyers market.

I shoot primarily narrative, and as terrific as the F5 has been for me - it's a camera with zero pull amongst narrative producers. So I'd rather have either something super-cheap for the jobs that don't pay enough to bring more, or something flashy enough (ala Arri) that people will actually hand over money for it.

True, in Aus however TV stuff is mostly F5 / F55 at the moment. But yes, I will look at the eye closely. Looks like its really going to fit the bill.

That's interesting, because I actually think the two match quite well, (F3 and Alexa). I actually prefer the F3 to the F5 for instance.

Yes. I think the Gratical is good for semi pro type of cameras like the FS5, FS7, C100, C300 and others. Full pro cameras that have their own fully pro viewfinders like the F5, F55, F65, Alexa and Varicam don't really need it. They have their own connectors which send picture and power together. Much more handy than using SDI and needing separate power. 3rd party SDI viewfinders are a work around for semi pro cameras that don't have their own pro viewfinders.

If you shoot primarily narrative I say it's either Alexa or F35. No need to look anywhere else IMO and you won't find anything better anyway.
