FS7: Zacuto announces the "Gratical Eye"

They announced it last year at NAB too... It was a little different. Not matte finish. Not sure if it had false color before, sounds like they added some features.

heard about it today, looks good.

regarding false color, will it work with slog values - be adjustable - or is it more like rec709 values I wonder...

I'm going to shoot them an email about false colour. I've been through all of their online videos and manuals, and can't find the specifics anywhere (what the false colour scale is, or whether it's applied pre or post LUT).

The Zacuto Eye looks like a great replacement for the much less than spectacular FS7 stock viewfinder.

Hey Grug! I know it's off topic but I noticed you sold your F5? Out of curiosity what are you going for? I finally sold my FS7 and I'm on the market for a new camera. I'm seriously thinking of a F5 with an A7S to do the FS7 job. Those very rare situations the F5 may be too heavy. But the F5 will be better for all the other jobs where the FS7 wasn't a good fit because it wasn't "pro" enough. So I'm fine with the little extra weight in the F5. I couldn't put up with the FS7 quirks anymore. I think an A7S will do just fine to replace a stripped down FS7 if I really need smaller than a stripped down F5.

What are you getting?

Keep on reading this big weight difference thing.. Fs7 body only 2kg.. F5 body only 2.2 Kg.. thats a huge 2 grams difference ? .. they weight the same .. thats not where the weight is coming from.. its the lens that you use that will make any noticeable difference.. if you choose the smallest V mount you wont tell any difference. .. its an urban myth .. :)

200gm, not 2gm! ;)

Looks very good. Might get this for my the FS7 - the viewfinder of which is held together by gaff tape!. The anti-fog capability is worth the price alone!

I think the F5 is a great choice for most things. To my mind it remains the price/performance king on the market, nothing can touch it for versatility really. And that package deal with the A7S is crazy good value.

The bulk of my work is narrative, and (for reasons I've never understood) the F5 just hasn't made any headway with producers on that front. So I'm going to sit tight for the time being and see what happens. I suspect I'll either go VERY cheap or VERY pricey - there's just no room for the middle ground cameras in narrative it seems.

You do know that you can buy Zacuto anti-fog filters and put them in the FS7 viewfinder?

Back on topic, I love the look of this, I prefer using an external power source than lugging around those Canon batteries.

That's a very good question. Of course the Gratical is showing you the value of what is coming in to the unit. For example if you are recording log and sending log to the Gratical but put a Gratical LUT on the image you will be seeing the LOG values in the False Color. If you send a rec709 image to the Gratical you will see the values of that. So it's best to put a Gratical LUT on the image and also many cameras can't record LOG and then send a rec709 out the BNC.

Hope that helps

Thanks Steve,

Are you able to post up or link us to a False Colour scale for the Gratical? Something that lists the specific IRE values each colour sits at? I can't find that information anywhere on the website.

Cheers,

I watched the video, looks pretty slick. I like that they put rosettes on both sides. The little joystick+light is a clever design. Plus, that 2-pin Lemo that can auto-detect (and correct) the polarity is just awesome. That's a very annoying thing with 2-pin Lemo jacks, keeping track of who is using Arri standard vs. US standard.

Can anyone from zacuto comment of the non fog filters that are for sale? are they 52mm.. are there any with +1 /+2 diopter .. film cover ?

Thanks

These covers just give you anti-fog and they are 50mm http://store.zacuto.com/anti-fog-protective-covers-pack-of-3/
We have additional anti-fog diopters in +1 diopter, +2 diopter, +3 diopter and +4 diopter- These are 37mm. If you have additional questions, email sales at zacuto.com

Ok great thanks for the info.. I just wondered as a previous poster said he could use the "filters" presume the 50mm ones in his Fs7.. Im wondering if i can use them somehow in my F5 LCD EVF.. ?
