hi
can someone tell me how is the z1u/fx1 filmlook comparing to dvx?
if it's really worst, is it possible to have the same dvx look with magic bullet+ z1u?
and last question ... i ve read a lot of topics but i don t have the answer: is sony 25p ok? is it really far from dvx 25p? if i m shooting in 50i or 60i and deinterlace, will this be better resolution and quality than dv?
the final result must be shown on tv and put on 35mm film too but we need that dvx100 film look.
thanx

Its diferent, Z1 has a better response using GAin, in the DVX, gain comes with some noise.
Also it have more "latitude"

It does?  Where did you get that information?

If you mean the DVX has more latitude then yes, you are right, but if you think the Z1 has more latitude, then you are sadly mistaken.

Re: Z1U/FX1 and filmlook

I keep repeating this. If you want to see how the resolution of the CF25 is compared to Interlaced, there are plenty of tests. But the frames I posted on my test page seem to show that all together, CF25 is much better than interlaced. I will post the link again:

http://www.smashmyphone.com/hdvtest

You can click on the pictures to get the full resolution 1920x1080

You will see that Interlaced footage deinterlaced in post add horrible artifacts, and as far as I know, no program can avoid this. And the girl wasn't even moving much. Look at the eyes, the hair, and thin detail. Of course none of the frames look like pics from my Nikon D100 but I stopped using 50i. I suppose I will use it again if I have to do slow motion, like some members have demonstrated here, but really nothing else.

Re: Z1U/FX1 and filmlook

Hi

One thing you need to consider with the film look is alos the resolution.
I personaly just sold my XL1s and still don't know if I want to go for DVX or FX/Z1, but anyway the XL1s was producing a sort of film look in frame mode. I believe that cineframe and frame mode are doing the same job. they are creating a full frame picture using interpolation on the fly. not that great but better than nothing.

Now you said that you wanted to print on 35mm as well and here is the big difference.

the film look is not just about progressive scan or cineframe, it's also about lighting and post production.

but now keep in mind that fx/Z1 are producing image with double of resolution. so when printed on 35mm the result will be much better.

On the other hand I don't think that FX/Z1 offer as much as DVX to produce a nice cinema(like) picture. think also of what it means in terms of editing software and hardware if you go to HDV.

the big challenge today I think, is to know what Panny is going to come up with for the HD/HDV market.

HDV is still young...

Re: Z1U/FX1 and filmlook

You have to question yourself: what is filmlook? Are you aware of the fact that you can create almost every 'look' with film? In post and during the shoot choosing lenses, filters and stock? So are you thinking of the old school 8mm look? To the widescreen? absorbing light, 24p motion, resolution, DOF, colors, latitude, contrast, grain...?

To the video to film transfer or the video on TV or DVD look? To the editing? The big screen? Use of motion within the scene? The gamma? Actors?
You want a comparison between a high end videosystem or a 'consumer' system? HDV has only resolution and the 16:9 format (nice) to offer to start with. It is interlaced (not nice) and you have to work a lot in post to give it another look. Which look? I don't know.

Re: Z1U/FX1 and filmlook

How many of you own the HVR Z1? I mean guys the camera is still new as for myself I am still waiting to see some results of this camera there is hardly any footage available and as far it goes for fx1 well i have seen some footage but I wouldnt compare that to the dvx since its a consumer camera and not a prosumer like the dvx in the other case if you compare the hvr-z1 to the dvx i am sure it be a whole different ball game.

:)

Re: Z1U/FX1 and filmlook

Hmm, a consumer cam that costs more than the Prosumer DVX should not be compared to one another. Instead, we should be comparing the DVx to a camera that costs 75% more? i don't get your reasoning?
Also, from what I have seen and read, according to Sony, there is no difference optically between the Z1 and the FX1. This is really no surprise as this is the path that sony tends to follow, with their VX/PD series.

Re: Z1U/FX1 and filmlook

I agree that it looks like that Sony did not changed the optics for the Z1. But Sony said they want to learn from the feedback given from the FX to reconsider next steps. After a longer period we can see if there is a software or fault recognition change that improves the signal.

Re: Z1U/FX1 and filmlook

Well scharky I didn’t mention anything about the price I don’t know which post your reading? The xl2 is more costly then the dvx but you would still compare it correct? but Sony has clarified the fact that the FX1 is for consumer grade customers and HVR-z1 is for the pro. So what if its a bit pricy! in my opinion it gives you a lot more then what the dvx offers but that’s my opinion and yes the proper way to compare would be to compare the dvx to the hvr-z1 since they both come in the same proline unless in your opinion you consider the dvx consumer grade cam. ::)

Re: Z1U/FX1 and filmlook

Hey, captain Jack. I know it's your opinion, no offense was intended.. If sony wants to release a $4000 camera and call it a consumer model, then that is there problem. However, I don't see many "consumers" buying that camera, infact I have seen many professional applications with that camera. My point was, a company can lable a camera whatever they want. If Porsche were to release a "budget" porsche starting at $30,000, it would still be $30,000 and should be compared to cars in a similar price range. Just because it says "budget" infront of it's name does not mean it should be compared to a Geo.
However, I think the DVX should be compared to both the FX1 and Z1 as they really are both the same camera. If I were to buy one it would be the Z1 as it has cineframe 25 and the FX1's cineframe 24 is a joke. However, one must keep in mind that we are comparing cameras that are $2000 different in price. Believe it or not, that is a pretty big factor for most people. As of this time i am content with my DVX, sure the XL2 has slightly higher resolution in 16x9 and sure the FX1 and Z1 look great in interlaced mode, however, these factors are not big enough for me to change cameras. In MY opinion, the DVX still has a look that I have not seen in these other cameras. They may come close, but not an extra $1000-$2000 difference in my mind.
So in all good fun, Capt. Jack, I meant no offense and was just asking a question, but thank you for clarifying your point.

Re: Z1U/FX1 and filmlook

I nead to know if there is any diference between the z1u and the z1e

Re: Z1U/FX1 and filmlook

Interesting question. I don't know. I mean, maybe the battery charger is different, but I don't think there's anything different about the camera itself...

... is there? Anyone know?

Re: Z1U/FX1 and filmlook

The European version is sold in Euros. Sell your Euros, buy US$, you get the camera in the US and probably save enough money to fly to NY and stay there a couple of days.

Re: Z1U/FX1 and filmlook

Yes, princigalli. And everytime you want to have something repairedduring the first two years of warranty you fly back to hand it in at b&h.

Or, what I would suggest, you go to Swizzerland, buy it there. That saves 1.500,- Euros.

But please - back to the topic - could somebody please find out what that so called 25p mode in the Z1 can do and how that looks like. I am willing to pay more for a pro cam if the software is pro. So if anyone knows if the Z1 does this doodledoo about deinterlacing and turning 60i into 25p (or even 24p as we are still talking about software manipulated frames grabbed interlaced).

Pls pls pls just once compare the Pros and not the prizes in those fancy tests like the one including the DVX, the XL2 and the FX1 (that wasn't all too fair, was it?).

Well, i havnt been around here for a while, but i can tell u that i used the first Z1 that came to chile, last year in a festival it was being shown, and it has more latitude. specialy in dark areas.
ITS REAL
