Z1U from filmmaker's perspective?

I don't think this question has been addressed directly, though I may be wrong, of course.

I have a DVX, but I'm thinking about making the leap to HD at some point. The Sony hvr-z1u looks pretty cool, but my main interest is in filmmaking. I personally am not that obsessed with the 'film look' but I think a lot of people I need to impress are.

I'm sure the Z1U is great for covering events and weddings, etc, any thoughts on it's use for fiction (non-documentary) filmmaking in particular? It sounds like the new JVC is better for the filmmaking (24p and all) but this camera sounds pretty good.

This question seems to open a whole can of worms, as everyone seems to have strong opinions on what looks ok, what looks terrible, etc.

So forgive my broad, subjective question and throw in your 2 cents!

I guess you are not thinking about film-filmmaking but video-filmmaking. You can use what ever you have to make video-film and it gonna be good if everything around your project is good.

I've just seen an "amateur" video-film of a young norvegian director. It was projected in cinema and they have used 2 x vx2000 camcorders and only 1 slow pc to put the hole thing together. I can tell you it was film. It wasn't just filmic but it was a film. Very good. I'm not talking about motion rendition or progressive frames but the way the video was created, the storry and how the actor was acting etc.

He made a new short film with a sony interlaced camera which turned out to be very good. Some stills from the short film here :

Filmmaking, video filmmaking ... it's all a matter of semantics. And since semantics is based upon individual perception then the phrase he used perfectly legitimate. After all it's just a string of phonemes. The meaning we give it is all in our head (literally).

The Z1 has quite a bit to offer the film maker - in particular with the 50 Hz modes it offers. While most claim that shooting 50i and down-converting provides a resolution advantage, CF25 offers an excellent approximation to 24p.

CF25's 1440x1080 4:2:0 colourspace coupled with it's effective resolution of ~1440x540 offers essentially 4:4:4 resolution at 960x540 at 25 Mbps. Comparing that to the 1280x720 4:2:0 at 19 Mbps(?) you can expect pretty comparable results.
