Z1 recording on DVCAM

Hi!

As far as I know it´s possible to record on DVCAM with a Z1.
My question is now: what exactly will be recorded on DVCAM?

1. 16:9 image downscaled image?
2. Will the 1080 lines be converted to 576 lines? (Pal)
3. or is the chip resolution not used (only a part for a Pal/NTSC resolution)?

Does anyone has the possibility to record and post an image?

Thanx&Greetings

The Z1 doesn't record high-def to DVCAM, it records DVCAM as a regular DV camera. It goes into DV mode, not HDV mode. It will use the full chip but samples it at standard-def resolution, not high-def.

Thanks Berry,

so am I right that the DVCAM picture from a Z1 looks like a DV picture from "any" other DV camera? Or does it look like a downconverted HDV->PAL picture?

Well, it would look like a DV picture from an FX1 or Z1. The Z1 has its own "look"; the DVCAM recording is a higher-tape-speed recording of a DV signal.

No, it's identical. DVCAM and DV produce an identical picture, they use bit-for-bit identical compression and color sampling.

Thank you for the fast response that helps me in my decision.

The DVCAM was the only reason I was considering the Z1 over the FX1. I already have a BeachTek XLR adapter. So I can use pro mics.

Is there anything else I may miss going with the FX1?

Several things are different; as to whether you'll miss 'em or not is up to you. The Z1 offers individual control over audio channels, the FX1 doesn't. The Z1 is switchable PAL/NTSC and 50Hz/60Hz HD, the FX1 isn't. The Z1 offers CF25, you won't find that on the US FX1. The Z1 has a second CinemaTone gamma curve too. I am sure there are other differences, but those are the ones I can think of off the top of my head.

The second gamma curve may be interesting but it is not enough to sway me. Thanks again. I really appreciate your input.
