Z-Finder...Houdeloop...LCDvf...

I know this has been gone over quite a bit, but I wanted to know specifically from GH1 users which one of the viewfinders fit best and is most usable for focus. I know a lot of these are made for 5d/7d cameras and the GH1 may be an awkward fit. Also I know some are better than others for focusing. Any input would help, since I'm finally thinking of making the plunge into a viewfinder. Also, has anyone tried the Sock Loupe. Philip Bloom talked it up and the website claims it can be hand made to GH1 for $79. http://www.sock-loupe.com/

Thanks!!

I got one last Fall made "for the GH1", and it's useless. It's the second item I've purchased on Bloom's word that was a bust. The other item, the CineCity "Gliders" shoulder rig, he's since admitted is junk.

Someone on this board has gotten a Sockloupe recently, and it has a different way of connecting to the camera. He said it was pretty handy now. I'll see if I can find that post for you and link to it later, unless someone beats me to it.

JerryB-

Here's that link:

Scroll down to DMPSK8's pictures. I've found it's pretty useless to mount it (or anything) on the LCD when it's swung open, since it doesn't lock in place. It looks like you can mostly get it firmly mounted with the LCD closed with the new Sockloupe design, This would allow you to get the camera a couple inches away from the face (as opposed to using the VF, which is often a great way to operate the cam) when that helps...such as if it's on a tripod or slider and you can't quite get your eye to the VF due to your rig getting in the way. Make sense?

I don't really see the point of these on the GH1, you have a 1.4 million dot viewfinder, use it.

I agree, the LCD works for me most of the time, but sometimes I wouldn't mind the extra stabilization, when I'm not using a gunstock. Also, the LCD works for focusing, but it is still difficult to keep focus with faster lenses in the LCD. Thought this might help.

Just tossing the idea around, I would def not use on LCD while it is open.

I just received the Hoodman, but my GH1 is in the shop. Man, I hope it's back this week!

Ben, I typically use the VF and handhold 80% of the time with a simple flash bracket. But I think the Hoodloupe will come in handy on occasions where I can't quite get to the VF easily. I've had it on a tripod before for an interview where it was a bit difficult to get my eye all the way to the VF. I hope (don't know for sure) that the extra couple inches of the Hoodloupe attached to the closed LCD would work better. Because of my old eyes (43.5 yrs. old), judging focus by the LCD alone is usually a lost cause. At any rate, the Hoodloupe was cheap enough to give it a try.

yeah but- an eyecup would be nice- anyone find one/or know of one that could some how fit over the rectangular one that's there now?

I know someone here had good luck with one from an old betacam. I am just trying out the cups whenever I use a prosumer video camera hoping to eventually find one :)

The sockloupe's been decent. It'd be significantly more useful if the GH1's hinge was more stiff while open.

Here's it on the shoulder.

I also had a bad luck with stuffs philip bloom recommend. I throw in the traschcan lol! His dvd like informercial! Just need 800 number! Lol! Don't bought it!

I agree with ben ....what´s the point ? What´s needed is a magnifying eyepiece . There are a bunch available but none to fit the ghs´. Strange cause you would think magnifying the evf would be a good market.
