Z e r 0   **Director's Cut**

Re: Z e r 0   **Director's Cut**

I think it's MUCH better. It's kind of personal. But you estabilish a Fake flashback with the BW (Because everybody thinks BW means Flashback) and you surprise the viewer making it a future event (but BW because it's in his mind). The music is very nice (the actors seem much more convincing with the new cut too), and the ending runs to a happy end, but stops and is actually open. The film was a little cheesy in the first cut, but now has some sort of bittersweetness that I like. For what it's worth that's my take on it. Good work.

Thanks a bunch. You hit the nail on the head with the b&w. I thought it would be cool to twist that convention around and it sort of throws a red herring into the mix. I feel with this new cut, it is A LOT harder to figure everything out beforehand.

Re: Z e r 0   **Director's Cut**

MUCH much better. Now it doesn't telegraph the plot like it did before. I still think there's a bit more you can shave off for pacing purposes, but it's a minor point.

Don't be surprised if this version takes first place in the next festival you enter ;)

Side note:
how did you get that frame size in your quicktime movie? I shot my film with the anamorphic adapter and cropped in camera to get a 2:35:1 frame. But when I output through cleaner and crop down, my frame isn't as wide as it appears when I look at the raw footage from the tapes to my TV. A teaser of the film is on my site with the frame size I'm talking about. Got a suggestion for me? I love that really wide frame...

Basically, I set the project size in my NLE to 175h x 436w which squeezed the movie, then stretched the picture vertically to regain correct proportion and remove the bars. Rendered out uncompressed and used Sorenson Squeeze to make the quicktime.

Re: Z e r 0   **Director's Cut**

I agree. The first cut was a labor to watch.
Unless I'm mistaken, he started smoking earlier in the first cut..
It doesn't feel as cheezy in this cut, he just looks like a guy who smokes instead of an actor with a cigarette. I didn't even want to watch it last time, it was like "Here we go: another Noir stab with a pretentious monologue about how cool he is." (Which it's not at all.) Much more natural and relevant now.

I'm trying to imagine this film on a big screen in a dark room. I think its impact would increase tremendously. I watch it pretty apathetically because I've never lost a really close relative, but I imagine that it would really hit home for people who've been there.
This sounds kinda cheezy, but if this were shown at a support meeting for mourning people, i can imagine that it would be on a whole 'nother level.

As it relates to the rest of us as just another sweet DVX clip, it's MUCH better than the first cut, and I also love the way you used the three diff color temps, and the symbolism of the hand that holds him back...a hand from the past...Powerful.

ALSO, you have the BEST "production company clip" I've seen by a video person. Freakin hooray, man. Good business.
