YouTube to use H.264 encoding

YouTube has more clout than both of those slammed together. YouTube offering better quality viewing experiences opens up another avenune that some of use wouldn't dare travel down.

Ever see the threads here where people post up their stuff? They get flack because YouTubes compression is horrid.

YouTube will be using h.264 only for some videos for AppleTV/iPhone's pleasure, under special, secret URLs, not for their main web site. The main site will continue to be Flash-based and you, the director, won't be able to influence the encoding process. The Flash codec is not too bad btw, it has a good quality/bitrate ratio, close to h.264's (at least Flash 9 and the upcoming Flash 10).

Which special videos and your source of information? For the benefit of the rest of the community.

I am a tech journalist (ex-editor in chief at OSNews.com ), and a developer. YouTube is not going away from Flash -- you are crazy if you think that they will. I am pretty sure that YouTube will offer videos to Apple's products with URLs that won't be public. The re-encoded videos will be for Apple and Apple only. That's why they have a deal and they make a noise about it. Just like Helio had a deal with MySpace Mobile. No other phone could access that site, but only Helio's. The URL was a secret, and even if you could modify your browser's user agent, you still couldn't access it.

I am not a liar. I am just in the industry long enough.

That's going to be super annoying if Apple does that. I'm going to get more crap from my friends with Macs proclaiming that Apple is the only/best option.

Me: Hey I just built a PC for $600 that is faster than your $2,000 Mac.
Friend with Mac: Did I come with Garage Band? Case closed.

Didn't see anyone calling you a liar. Just wanted to know where your info came from. No harm in that.

Heh.

Well, my friend bought a $2,000 Mac a year ago and it's a 2.5ghz dual-core with 2gig of RAM.

I just built an E4300 setup for around $600 that runs at 3.3ghz dual-core with 2gig of RAM.
