Youtube Mixing levels

I just watched on my Macbook, and the levels were good. Not as loud as some, but with my computer's volume all the way up, and listening on the internal speakers, it was good.

The web is an ambiguous place when it comes to mix levels. Some will tell you to mix to the same standards as film/DVD. Some, the same standards as broadcast. Some, the same standards as CD (which seems to be the popular choice... louder is better in this practice). And YouTube is the worst place in the world for continuity (save for my hometown's cable access channel). I have watched YouTube vids that I could barely hear with all volume controls maxed, and some that started overdriving my speakers.

I'd chose a happy medium. Boost your mix by about 6dB. And possibly compress the dynamic range just a bit, though not quite as much as for TV. I'm sure that many replies will follow in this thread, each with a different idea. But since the web has no standards to speak of, it's really all about personal preference.

I beleive youtube has changed their audio compression over the last couple months to allow for everyday folks who dont master the audio to have good levels so it messes with those who mix their audio correctly.

I had to put a sine wave under a music track for a music vid because the youtube compression was making my mastered audio track pump and breath like crazy so the constant tone allowed youtube to handle it correctly. the trick was to mix the sine wave low enough that it was inaudible by ear.
