Youtube goes 4K and announces 5 million in grants to partners

The EX1 is a camorder costing six times what a GH-1 goes for?? Even getting close to one of those high-end looks is a victory in my book and budget, I don't expect GH-1 footage to EVER compare to a "filmic look"-if I had my druthers I'd shoot 35mm and live in a castle but that's not happening-apples and oranges IMHO-Blackout I use Vegas 9 and find the newish update from d to e handles GH-1 footage faster in load times and rendering.

50mbit avchd 1080p fhd ptools hack 'c' settings 24p n checked compressed to 20mbit sony mp4 in vegas 9d.

I saw your video, Blackout. It doesn't look bad, but I've seen better on YouTube, and I think it's the lower resolution of the GH1 that is holding you back from truly being the "sharpest" video on YouTube. I still think the GH1 looks like video HD and not as filmic as some of the others (I've seen more filmic looks from it, but it's rare).

Frankly, I think well-shot EX footage looks a lot better when uploaded to YouTube (just haven't seen too much that's been uploaded at the full 1080). Though I will agree that the 4k test clip is a terrible waste of the potential of RED.

The EX1 is the past. Huge sensors is the present and the future. Plus the GH1 has the Panasonic MOJO! And just wait for the AF100!
 
Except that huge sensor does not help with detail, only with getting the shallow DOF effect. Shallow DOF does not equal sharpness.

Really? Tell that to the people at Panasonic and Red. That their big sensor cameras are not as sharp as a 1/2" camera. They are going to be very disappointed for sure.
 
Don't be foolish, John, we're talking DSLRs, where the "big sensor" only comes into play for stills, not for video.

Come on. The GH1 sensor IS FOR VIDEO. The stills on the GH1 come second. The idea of a big sensor is to emulate the size of motion picture film. The sharpness or softness of film are part of what you want from it. The shallow DOF is also. A 1/2" video camera is a 1/2" camera and that is why people put a bulky lens adapter in front of it. To get a better "film look" with shallow DOF. Not "sharp" footage from a 1/2" camera.
 
John, your statement is ignorant. The GH1 can only resolve about 600-700 lines of resolution. Why is this? Why does the GH1 utilize "line-skipping" (EDIT: or it could be pixel binning) when reading data off its sensor whilst in video mode?

With a lens adapter on the front of a 1/2" camera you get two things: a full 900-1000 lines of resolvable resolution (EX-series for example) and shallow DOF. That's why people continue to do so today.

Do they? Again it is not all about sharpness.
 
PS: The title of my youtube video was "THE CLEAREST 1080p encode on youtube" not "the sharpest".. but I think it's pretty sharp. I think it looks really really good.. better than most 'not all' ex1 stuff I have seen but you haven't yet shown me a clip that represents what you are talking about... I wasn't saying I was the best shooter in the world with the best camera in the world I was just really impressed with how great the encode came out and wanted to share with other GH1 users. I feel with the ptools hack, the direct editing of native 24p avchd and encoding to a 20bit mpeg4 file, I have jumped legions of quality above my past attempts...

Anyway we have entered into the realm of silly here, obviously if you have or like a ex1 that's fine too.

How many actual lines does the ex1 resolve off the chart for comparisons sake... just out of curiosity....
 
Here's one I found.

I'll grant you the "clearest vs. sharpest" point, Blackout, but I still prefer the look of the EX1 at 1080. Unfortunately, I've found next to ZERO clips on YouTube so far that are actually in 1080. I can't remember the clip I saw (it was like some travel/educational short thing...probably another reason why it looked so good because of the exotic location).
