Youtube goes 4K and announces 5 million in grants to partners

Holy poop. That's pretty amazing, but what's the point? I guess it's to progress technology and stay ahead of the curve, but I can't imagine that more than 0.1% of users will be using this in the next year. I'll probably try it just to take a look, but for just about everything I do, 1080p is more than adequate. My home computer (which is a couple years old) has trouble even playing 1080p some times.

Yeah I was a little confused with that as well... they said "imax uses two 4K projectors......" ummmmm... no it doesn't it uses a f&#ing imax FILM projector!

That being said.... it seems they have only alloted a little more bandwidth to the 4K versions than the 2k (1080p) versions... I actually know ONE person who has a 4k monitor for editing RED, and being the insane person I am I watched the 4K films they have up and the encoding is pretty horrible right now...

I still dare anyone to beat my 1080p encode here and show me something clearer:

I CHALLENGE YOU!

My theory is google just has so much umpteen gadzilion dollars that they just wanted to flatten out the market now and crush anything else like vimeo / exposure room that were catering as the niche for 'real' film makers who were turning their noses at youtube as being ghetto like Jerry Springer.

I have been touting for a while now that youtube encodes have surpassed vimeo encodes, even the premium versions. The only thing good about vimeo was that they allowed people to dl the original file but only for a week unless you pay them.... but hell I can put the original file on my own server if I want, why am I going to pay vimeo? I like the vimeo community better but they better offer something interesting soon or be left in the dust. It's annoying seeing your 1920 x 1080 vid downsampled to 1280 x 720... all my videos look 'blurry' to me on vimeo.

I know I am a kook when it comes to visual quality but now, with everyone and their mom getting a 60 inch led rgb megascreen in the living room with a youtube & netflix enabled blu-ray player, there is a WORLD of difference between 720p and 1080p on big displays... and people don't notice it until they SEE it but once they SEE 1080p HD they know....I played the above link on a HUGE display at Best Buy in Union Square NYC and people DID NOT BELIEVE it was streaming off of youtube! 'NO THAT'S A BLU-RAY!' said the store clerk.

SCORE 1 FOR ME!

Even if technically the GH1 is only resolving 600 actual resolution lines... whatever the hell is happening that appears to be resolution is fantastic....and youtube seems to absolutely LOVE the mp4 sony vegas spits out, the exact same encode out of cs5 comes out with a hell of a lot more noise and blockies.... I don't quite understand what is going on but I am reducing my 50mbit avchd hacked GH1 footage to 20 mbit mp4s and youtube is very happy with that. Going higher doesn't seem to do much and gets into the void of diminishing returns.

I gotta get me some of that 5 mill. Need to stop using commercial tracks now that I am done with my 'testing' phase. Next gig I get someone to do original score.

Well, that and also, the people on Vimeo are much more mature and give constructive criticism and nice compliments instead of being rude and childish like a lot of people are on Youtube. I think from an artistic point of view, Vimeo is a much better community to display your work in. Just my opinion.

What?! That's crazy! Not everyone has a 1080p monitor, let alone 4k... I think faster framerates like 60p would have been preferred by most people.

I agree.. virtually no one has a monitor higher than 1080p... makes no sense right now other then high end print professionals.... strange they are not supporting 60p yet officially either but I bet that is in there or close to being in there if not already working....

But... things will only go up and up.... TV tubes are dead & hd isn't the weird thing only the rich kid has anymore...

Oh god... are you gonna chase me down in every thread now cave? I charge a fee for that...

And what do you mean.. fishy? It's real.. go on youtube... it's not just a 'we may do this' they did it.. there are 4k files up now. You can stream the 4k files to your 2k monitor if your computer can handle it.

Looks like poop:

blackout I gotta admit. thought you were joking. i watched your vid it's possibly the sharpest I've ever seen on youtube. how did you do it/

Wait are you talking about the first like I posted or the second? The first is mine, the 1080p one. The second is the 4K one - which I don't think looks that good.

I saw your video, Blackout. It doesn't look bad, but I've seen better on YouTube, and I think it's the lower resolution of the GH1 that is holding you back from truly being the "sharpest" video on YouTube. I still think the GH1 looks like video HD and not as filmic as some of the others (I've seen more filmic looks from it, but it's rare).

Frankly, I think well-shot EX footage looks a lot better when uploaded to YouTube (just haven't seen too much that's been uploaded at the full 1080). Though I will agree that the 4k test clip is a terrible waste of the potential of RED.

I'm not a big fan of the EX1. I do a lot a shoots where they are used as they are the standard fare at Columbia university and I think it's kinda cold and videoish looking... almost your exact critique of the GH1. But again you'd have to point me to a specific clip.

To me, this is the best encode I have gotten out of youtube or seen so far as 1080p but yes, it is the gh1 with it's limits, if someone was shooting raw on a high end cam that truly got the 1920 x 1080p resolution I would really love to see it....

To the others who asked how I encoded that video - the flavor was 50mbit avchd ptool hack 'c' settings 24p n checked edited natively in sony Vegas 9d 64bit with 32bit color on, compressed down to a 20mbit sony mpeg 4 double pass encode, then uploaded to youtube (about 700 meg file)

- Blackout

The EX1 is sharper stock, but most people will have to use it with a lens adapter which will decrease that sharpness & light sensitivity... again... you'd have to point me to a specific clip, show me a sony ex1 clip on youtube that you think encoded better, sharper, or with less blocks or noise. I searched and I haven't found one. The best I had seen on that camera was something called 'bubbles' on vimeo.
