Has anybody ever seen this before? A complete outage?

Users worldwide are reporting that YouTube is down for many people. The reason is not yet known, but reports are coming in fast worldwide. This is unusual for one of the most popular websites in the world. So far, YouTube hasn’t issued an official statement about what happened except to note that they are working on the problem. Although the site may have occasionally had brief issues in the past, being down this long is very rare. This is a developing story.
YouTube hasn’t identified the problem yet, but did acknowledge on Twitter that they are working on the issue. They wrote: “Thanks for your reports about YouTube, YouTube TV and YouTube Music access issues. We’re working on resolving this and will let you know once fixed. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause and will keep you updated.”

Do you have YT (near the time of this post)?

Can't access it in Aussie as of 1:19pm Sydney time (7:20 Los Angeles time... though a day behind) Does that mean you won't have it tomorrow? :) Must admit I've never see an outage like this. Just goes to show how fragile the world's communications can be given the right set of circumstances.

California had an earthquake and Silicon Valley along with the rest of California is now an island. There is a temporary outage during the restructuring. Youtube will be the official communictions network for the new country of California, run by Google.

Youtube running fine here in the San Francisco area.

It's intermittent at best (even here on my side of the San Francisco Bay)...

Yep, YouTube is down

YouTube is experiencing a major outage. Users across the world started to notice that the video service’s sites and mobile apps were down around 9:20pm ET, and everything remains inaccessible more than an hour later. YouTube TV and Youtube Music are also affected by the service disruption.

Just connected via VPN from Sydney, Aust to Czech Republic and can access the world of YouTube without any issues from over there.

Looks like it's coming back...might take a while for everything everywhere to get back online, but probably not too long.

Still: A funky occurrence, huh?

Not even thinking of asking you how that works...

I did, however, get curious about YouTube/Google Data Centers. According to Wiki:
A 2016 estimate was that Google at the time had 2.5 million servers (and that is sooo out of date!).

The locations of Google's various data centers are (taken from https://www.google.com/about/datacenters/inside/locations/index.html)
Berkeley County, South Carolina
Council Bluffs, Iowa
Douglas County, Georgia
Jackson County, Alabama
Lenoir, North Carolina
Montgomery County, Tennessee
Pryor Creek, Oklahoma
The Dalles, Oregon
South America: Quilicura, Chile
Europe: Saint-Ghislain, Belgium
Hamina, Finland
Dublin, Ireland
Eemshaven, Netherlands
Asia: Jurong West, Singapore
Changhua County, Taiwan

Interesting how many are in the American South, and... none in California??? Earthquakes?

Then Wiki has:
Google has numerous data centers scattered around the world. At least 12 significant Google data center installations are located in the United States. The largest known centers are located in The Dalles, Oregon; Atlanta, Georgia; Reston, Virginia; Lenoir, North Carolina; and Moncks Corner, South Carolina.

In Europe, the largest known centers are in Eemshaven and Groningen in the Netherlands and Mons, Belgium.

Google's Oceania Data Center is claimed to be located in Sydney, Australia.

One of the largest Google data centers is located in the town of The Dalles, Oregon, on the Columbia River, approximately 80 miles (129 km) from Portland. Codenamed "Project 02", the $600 million complex was built in 2006 and is approximately the size of two American football fields, with cooling towers four stories high. The site was chosen to take advantage of inexpensive hydroelectric power, and to tap into the region's large surplus of fiber optic cable, a remnant of the dot-com boom.

And they all went *poof* for 2 hours???

Probably a bad DNS server claiming to be the authoritative server for everything. Or it could be that something was happening on the moon and the gubbermint shut things down to conceal it. I haven't seen the "real" reason posted, but I also haven't gone looking. In theory it should be impossible for the whole thing to go down like that.

I experienced the outage last week, too. I actually thought the video on the saved tab may have just been taken down and closed it out. But then I saw this and realized that wasn't the case.
