Your website!

Yeah unless bandwidth is a big problem to you, you really should improve the quality by quite a bit

Yea, my web designer doesn't quite get that. I told him that I'm not worried about file size, I just want high quality. The current file sizes are about 5mb and his higher quality updated one he sent me was around 10mb and it was still bad quality. I just downloaded the trial version of flash and am hoping it will let me encode and save with that, so we'll see how that goes. (unless anyone on here wants to do some encoding for me....)

Well, yeah that's one of the more annoying trial-and-error aspects of the process, in my opinion. For the corporate projects we were just doing, where we put the files in a Flash player, we tried about 8 or 9 different settings before getting what we wanted. We decided upon about 30 meg files, for 3 minute videos.

With Quicktime I've put a music video up that was 90 megs even, because the quality for anything less was annoying to me. But that's pretty excessive because only 10 views and you're nearly at 1 gig, haha, which is kind of insane. I have a dedicated server, fortunately, so I think I am now getting 1,500 gigs of transfer per month, which is good, I never come anywhere close to that fortunately.

if you export them from quicktime pro to ipod they should be pretty small. a full feature film ripped from dvd which is 3+GB to start goes down to about 1GB or less. and that's a two-hour movie. or even mp4 at 320x240 should drop them way down without losing quality. and if you're not worried about file size you should be able to get amazing quality (and fast streaming) with quicktime pro.

I need your honest appraisal; how can I improve my index page?

I'd like to start putting some long clips on my pages. What format should I use, mpeg4, h264, flash?

How big should a file be so most people with good connections can see them?

i'd break up that index page into like three pages.. it's just too much on one page, a lot of writing, and kinda messy (no offense, u said be honest right!) . it's kinda like you have three pages in one, the way you have columns and stuff. get rid of that asap.

think of it like a magazine. The home page is the cover with blurbs(simple with immediate access to any area). and each subsequent section is like a story in the magazine. the further you go into the site, the less flashy and simple it can become (think how once a magazine story is continued at the end of the thing, all there is is text and small ads, where up front, you've got ad spreads and big pictures.)
