Your overall opinion of TwilightFest?

I think Aaron Cheney, who wrote one of the songs in our film, said it best in this post from the Barn Dance thread:

I love this quote! It is so true. A big part of why I continue to enter these fests is that I know I'll get some useful bits of feedback. People were not afraid to tell me what didn't work for them, and that's good. I can either fix it (sound), or decide that I am okay with some people not clicking with the piece, and leave it as is. But, I get a "test audience" larger than any I could put together in person. If I'm not willing to at least acknowledge the reaction of the audience and accept the validity of their experience, then I have no business sharing my film in the first place.

YES! Yes and yes and yes and yes! That's exactly what I'm taking about. I find it so ridiculous and childish when people get upset and defensive about criticism. Thanks Amy!

By the way I haven't gotten around to watching your entry. I promise I'll be honest. And detailed.

Everybody just needs to STOP NOW! I have heard enough of this nonsense... the mere fact that people are complaining about other people complaining about criticism is absolutely silly.. high-school stuff.... come on people :) can we just stop this nonsense.

No worries. I watched about 3/4 leisurely, then quick sat through the rest before voting ended. I have to go back and write down my thoughts on those I haven't left comments for. Watching 68 shorts is harder than it seems. :)

I watch the first :60 seconds and if I aint into by then ? I switch off.

(Like the first 10 Pages of a screenplay adage ...)

If SIMON was on these boards; it'd be awesome.

I'm upset about you being upset about me being upset about other people being upset!

We just got nothing to do until they announce the next fest. I've been twiddling my thumbs since they announced I didn't make the top 7. I tell you, thumb-twiddling gets old quick.

LOL :beer: :Drogar-Evil(DBG):

I don't get why you are wasting your energy at being upset about people who don't like getting their films, and the status as film makers ripped apart.

Slamming a film that was made for a generally educational festival, and giving criticism are very different things. If this was a major fest with submissions and such it would be a very different ballgame. The DVXuser film fests are designed to get people using their cameras and get people interested in film making. Our numbers keep climbing. The new people just want to shoot something. The prizes and the finalists are just something nice the user does.

We don't want to push people away. We don't want to get people so they never pick up a camera and exhibit their work again. This is educational. And I have a feeling you might have forgotten about that.

I was really impressed with the overall standard of films here - and utterly gutted that i didn't submit one into the contest whaa! Next fest i'm definately in.

I had just viewed all the films from Hallowfest before downloading all the ones for Twilightfest and all i can say is the difference in quality (story/technical) is staggering imo.

I watched all the films, couldnt comment on all, rated all, but there were only 2 or 3 that i struggled to watch all off, (I bravely did!) and with hallowfest there were far more that i was skipping a bit!

So i reckon all the participants and organisers should be really proud, there going from strength to strength and its certainly inspired my participation for the next fest!

In regard to giving criticism, I feel like if I am hard on a film, it'll be like saying my film is better. If I were to say, "The lighting isn't very good," I don't want to sound like I think the lighting in my own film is perfect. I don't feel I can give honest criticism in the fests when I'm participating. It has nothing to do with trying to win the fests (really doesn't matter me), but something about sounding like I am superior if I have bad things to say.

Interesting point.

Based on all the comments here, and that in general films just keep getting better and better, then I can only assume the system must be working regardless of individual pet peeves on how critiques work. I have a few, but those are obviously minor in the big picture of the succeess that is the end result.

I stand corrected on a few perceptions, and I stand firm on a few others.

Looking forward to applying all I learned this round, and digging in for the next.

Well I guess I'm the lucky one, this is my 50th post, so as you know I couldn't vote on your entries. I did watch all 69 of them and some were better than others. Some were actually GREAT imo!

I got the best of both worlds, great entertainment in the viewings, and feed back on our very first film festival entry.

We are so thankful for this opportunity to participate in the Twilight Fest, and we look forward to the next.

Thank you for your help and thank you for your work it's been most benificial for us.

We hope we can return the favor.

Maybe Chris Messineo has the best idea. Next fest I'll take it to heart.

Stick your neck out and for sure someone will take a whack at it.

I don't know how good an idea it was.

I watched every second of every film in this fest and voted on them all (just like I have for every previous fest).

However, this is the first fest where I have not offered any real criticism (except for some praise where I couldn't help myself) and honestly, it hasn't been as much fun (even if I avoided taking a few lumps).

Yea, you could vote even without 50 posts. If you didn't see the stars you should just PM Larrry, I think he clearly stated that 50 post rule and/or film submitter.

I know I could.

I believe his son is the primary filmmaker. That's why he couldn't vote.
Not sure if he can vote in the second round now that he has 50 votes though. I thought you needed 50 votes when the Fest started. I didn't think you could rack them up during the Fest and then vote.

Wayne, if not.... contact Larry and get your votes in for the second round!
You never know.

honestly, i submitted my films mainly for the criticism. i didnt do it to win anything ( it is most gracious of the sponsers to offer prizes ).

i do wish more people critiqued the hell out of my films, i said this before on another thread but where else am i going to get any feedback from others who wish to do the same thing as myself? i'd even gladly take, " your film lost my intersest so fast i turned it off." - as i think Hudson said earlier in this thread. that's totally fine with me. at least i know someone tried to watch the thing.

that said i know its a lot of work to comment on all the films, i have 3 or 4 left to review myself, and because i do have a day/night job i gotta watch them between 1 and 3 am, so i do know it is a lot to ask for. i also know it aint easy to leave a neg remark, maybe we can "sign" a disclaimer which allows for anyone to leave behind any sort of comment?

but if you wish to comment, by all means, comment away! to hear what didn't work, what might've worked, what might i do differently, or anything in between.... anyways, i'm glad to hear you might have a change in heart.
