I am thinking of shooting my short film in 30p and all the flash back military scenes in 24 p with a 1/500 speed.
tell me what you think guys?

Well for the military scenes thats a good option to shoot for action. Im am wondering why though you would shoot the rest in 30p?

i would shoot the whole thing in 24P and in the military scenes just use 24p at 1/500 speed like you said.

Agreed, I would do the same. Use lighting/color to change the look of the military scenes, not frame rates.

Or you might want to ditch the whole fast shutter thing and instead use a different color palette or maybe put a lot more contrast on the military shots?

The fast shutter Private Ryan look for these kinds of scenes is becoming a major cliche at this point.

Shoot the whole thing in 24p, though, if you want to get a look that most approximates film's cadence.

Of course the choice is yours...just my 1 cent.

thanks
what about using Magic Bullet? has anyone used it yet, I got the free DVD with the Camera but have not used it as i am still running final cut express and i need pro

I would concentrate on the script/shoot with the coloration concept in mind. Then take a couple of the scenes to be cc'd and do some color tests to determine the look you like and how the lighting works with your concept and color treatment.

Magic Bullet is good and has a wide variety of looks you can "tweak" but its slow and you will definitely want the FCP Pro upgrade.
