Your favorite NEW directors?

Re: Your favorite NEW directors?

This is kind of a weird thread, as with no guidelines as to what makes someone a new director, means the door is pretty well wide open.

I'm sitting on the fence whether Coltrain is being at all serious or not. Seeing as though Bela's been directing since 1978, I guess by that logic we could say Michael Mann is one of the best new directors, Ang Lee only started directing features in the early 90's so I guess he's a rookie.

If we deemed it as directors that will "shine for the next 10 to 15 years" or something like that, but cooler, I'd say Alfonso Cuaron is on that list as is Gondry. I'm sure we'll see more from Jared Hess(Napolean Dynamite) too.

But John, don't be on the lookout for that guys films. Stick to the **** you love - like the new Assault on Precinct 13 - seen it yet? I dug it, checked it out twice, got some good gunshots to the head. Just got my hands on the original and plan to see it by the weekend.

Back to the thread. I'd have to disagree with Stephen Sommers, he's a spfx genious, but all he's done is shovel crap down our throats time and time again, and if The Island is as bad as Michael Bays last few movies, I'd like to see him drift off into obscurity. Vincent Gallo... that's a real stretch for the "normal" film fans, but I got to give the guy credit for getting Chloe to give him head on camera. I agree with Gasper Noe as a choice, Irreversible was a very original style, which is great to see, though I'm sure most of us could have handled the rape scene being only 5 minutes long instead of 15.(ever notice that Vincent Gallo does the exact same motions to her on the bed at the end, or should I say almost beginning)

A guy I've grown to love, but every film is just ****ing sick and twisted is Takashi Miike. He's getting more mainstream as his films are popping up in our markets. He's made just tons of movies, and they are all(at least the ones I've seen) very disturbing. I just saw "Gozu" recently and thoroughly enjoyed it, but "Ichi" is still my favorite, probably just because of the massive amounts of blood sprays.

Joe Carnahan is good too, would have loved to see him do MI3.

Nice take Stabb. I agree (we always tend to have similar film likes; which reminds me... check your PM's)

Im not going out of my way to see BELA; I can pretty much guarantee its not my thing; like the sam brackage 4 minute crap fest. I gotta be entertained, not bored beyond tears.

In all fairness, Ill wait till I see some BELA before I bet my money on his suckiness.

Sides, yall know what films get me going!

I chose him because he really only came into his own in the late 80s and only has made 2 films since then. His early films are practically student films.

Mark Romanek directed those.  He's one of my favorite video directors and now he's working more on feature length films.

He wrote and directed One Hour Photo, which I haven't seen.  Is that any good?

Re: Your favorite NEW directors?

Gabe, I don't know, but I will liked to see some movie done by Romanek. ;)

Yes, I was quite impressed with his direction in Narc. Spike Jonz and Michel Gondry would also be my "new" director favs. I looove Charlie Kaufman scripts, and these guys do justice to Kaufman's scripts.
