What are your criteria for "new?" Someone who's just started directing features?
I'd say Michel Gondry. He's been directing brilliant music videos and commercials for years but only recently made the leap into features. "Human Nature" was a big let-down but "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind" was the perfect material for him.

Hitchcock, your favorite "NEW" director? Are you talking about the latest Hitchcock movie produced by MTV films with an unnatural green/blu flo look, quick cuts, fast shutter speeds, handheld shots aplenty, an out of place gangsta rapper who own draws attention themselves and not the story, unnecessary cgi, and a horrible soundtrack by a bunch of no-hit wonders? ;D

That's probably true, no offense.

Well, "Werckmeister Harmonies" is available on R2 dvd (along with "Damnation", which isn't quite as good) and is his most recent and probably most accessible film. It would be a great place to start. "Satantango" (the film I consider to be the equal of Werckmeister) is a little over-bearing due to it's 7.5 hour run time and it is also unavailble on video, other than ebay $100 bootlegs.
I will say Harris Savides for music video such as Nine Inch Nail’s Closer, Madonna’s Rain and Bedtime Story and Fiona Apple's Criminal, plus REM Everybody Hurts.

A nice reel.[/quote]
He's not a director, but he is a good cinematographer.
