Your favorite DVX feature

Re: Your favorite DVX feature

It comes with one. It mounts on the right side of the top handle, right behind the built-in mic.

Re: Your favorite DVX feature

at the risk of sounding cheesy, i'll add (as a non-owner but soon-owner) that the best feature of the dvx is actually _not_ 24p support. it's not dual XLR's either. instead, it's the fact that a single 5lb. unit has the capability of inspiring so many people to create the variety of moods, tell the kinds of stories, challenge existing notions about what is and isn't possible with a camera at this pricepoint, and most of all fulfill the desires of visionaries and creators everywhere with the means to acquire one.

like the most tactile stick shift in the automobile business this camera encourages you to go farther, push further; the only limitation for your creation is yourself.

-- my take as a soon-to-be proud owner of a 100a.

Yeah, sure. That and 24p. ;D

Granted -- you can output all of that stuff, just turn OSD display on. It'll output everything on the LCD, all menus and displays and warnings and everything, to an s-video or composite-video monitor. Won't output through firewire though.

Re: Your favorite DVX feature

and if I can add to my earlier comment...

DVX has a unique 'professional capability' in a 'consumer-prosumer level design' (not shoulder mounted etc). Highly useful in situations where pro video is restricted/or difficult to get.

Re: Your favorite DVX feature

I use the word affordable loosely, if ya raise it for the next model, then that means I have to beg alot more and will hardly get to use the damne thing.

Re: Your favorite DVX feature

The size and balance are pretty great and are overlooked, as is the wide angle lens, and I don't mind the lack of interchangable lense (though it's something I'd want on any 1/2'' or 2/3'' CCD camera).

I also like the option of extending the dynamic range with cine_gamma_d (which I do use from time to time despite the noise), but I still think dynamic range is what needs to be improved more than anything else. Shallow DOF (while nice) is over rated and sometimes a bad thing, but extra dynamic range literally can't do any harm. I'm hoping improved CCDs and HDTV's improvement over NTSC in terms of what color and luminosity values are acceptable allow for more dynamic range with consumer HD cams.

I sort of doubt it, but if anyone can do it...I hope it's panasonic.

Re: Your favorite DVX feature

Hi Jan:

I am surprised that nobody else responded with this - and it would seem to be the most obvious answer:

Best audio quality of any camcorder under $25,000.00!!!

Come on guys, aren't there any other audio geeks out there? Granted, the headphone output isn't good but the bottom line on recording specs, this camera kicks some butt. After dealing with substandard, horrible audio quality on the VX-2000, 2100, PD-150, 170, TRV-900 for years now, I bought this camera for one reason only, professional quality audio.

Thank you Jan and Panasonic fo finally getting a clue that video people and filmmakers need high quality audio to tell stories. I laugh at all of the users that tell me that their PD-150 has good quality audio, they must be deaf. I rented one for my last doc and the audio quality was almost unusable.

Best,

Dan

Re: Your favorite DVX feature

You get the feeling that "you are there" when you watch (or rather listen) to a wedding reception done with the dvx100. And using the built in mics no less! Yes the DVX100 does do exceptional audio recording. I won't, however, use the built in mics for news or documentary work. They're not appropriate for such unless you are close up to the source and don't have a better alternative.

Re: Your favorite DVX feature

Excellent point dan -- yes, we are very pleased that a manufacturer took the audio portion of the camera seriously and delivered quite usable audio hardware! I'm all the more appreciative of the DVX's audio after having played with the FX1 for a few days. The DVX really "got it right".

Re: Your favorite DVX feature

What I like is the NTSC bars and the ability to feed them to a monitor for calibration. Slick.

are u talking about the "xtreme dynamic range" found here?

Well that could not be what he is talking about because those scene files are for the SDX900. I think he was referencing the range that is is now possible under the additional gamma settings in the DVX100A. The dynamic range available to the 1/3" chip set is no where near what is possible on a 2/3" chip set. The SDX have at least an additonal 2 stops.

Hope that helps,

Jan
