Young Filmmakers in the SF Bay Area?

Being 17 its pretty hard to find people my age who share my passion for filmmaking. So I thought I would post a thread to see if there are any young filmmakers that would be interested in getting together in the bay area. Please feel free to post on this thread or message me if your interested. Look forward to hearing from you guys.

I guess i didnt realize what a rare commodity young filmmakers are, well , are there any of you in California?

Although I am passionate about learning and making films, I'm far from young. I am in northern California, but not close enough to SF to make a trip there.

One thing I just found in my local area is a Final Cut User Group. I haven't been to any sessions yet, but I plan to later this month. Maybe you could search for user groups in your area. It may take a while to find young filmmakers, but eventually you will. In fact, recently when asked casually what my plans were for the weekend at a local Trader Joe's, I mentioned to the clerk that I was in the process of learning Premiere Pro. It turns out that she and some friends had made at least 8 or 10 videos and put them up on YouTube. I'm not sure exactly what level their passion was for film by viewing them, but you never know.

Good luck.

College of Fine Arts... ring a bell? They have a huge film department. Not to mention all the other colleges that are offering low-high end courses for all ages.

I live in Berkeley, but a little bit older (23). If you'd like to get together, send me a message, I'm always up for anything that involves making movies.

I thought SF stood for South Florida Bay area -_- I was happy for a sec. I'm turning 21 next month and actually turned to film when I realized that going to Cali as an aspiring actor was just too cliche. I bought me a nice cam and started shooting skits with other friends but it's so hard because they aren't willing to invest any time to make a great production. I just wish I had at least one friend that cared for this art as much as I did. I too don't find many aspiring directors my age over here, I guess thats what will separate me from the overflowing population of "Actors". Can't wait to start school for this so I can network with people who take this seriously. If anyone is in the miami dade area, let me know!

I'm up for getting together in the Bay Area to work on some films. I'm kinda new at this but am willing to help. Give me a shout with any ideas.

I used to be young and a filmmaker in San Francisco. But that was a decade ago. Plus now I moved to San Jose. But there are tons of filmmaking groups in San Francisco.

I used to run the Super 8 Militia at the Artists Television Access (http://www.atasite.org), and sometimes they have some good events over at the Bay Area Video Coalition (http://www.bavc.org). I've been bummed ever since the Film Arts Foundation closed. I think they merged with the San Francisco Film Society (http://www.sffs.org/filmmaker-services.aspx).

Last year my friend was trying to get me to sign up for the Scary Cow Film co-op (http://www.scarycow.com), but my wife got pregnant so I didn't have time to shoot anything. I kept meaning to be part of Group 101 Films chapter in San Francisco (http://group101films.com), but I really don't have the time to make a film every month.

I tried some film groups in San Jose (http://www.meetup.com/Emerging-Artists-San-Jose-Digital-Filmmaking-Group) but they are just not the same as working with people in San Francisco. Anyway I hope some of these groups can help you!

Thanks for the info, I've been looking into finding some filmmakers in the bay area as well. It looks like group101 has stopped production in all their chapters, and hard to find good free info on the other sites other than SFFS, they have a youth program if that helps you young guns.

I might look into scarycow since i have the funds. Their membership is about $50/month or $480/year. Signed up for a info session but i think at the end might end up trying to get a MFA at AAU so I can get really into the nitty gritty. Hit me up if any of you guys in the bay want to work on a project, just finished a script for the horrorfest if anyone is interested.

Hi Everyone,

I'm a Scary Cow member and have been for some time now. If you really want to make movies it is a great group. We are having information sessions starting in October (9th, 13th, 26th and Nov 2nd). On November 5th we'll be having a screening of all of the movies that our members made within the last round (roughly made in the last 4 months). The goal is to learn through doing, working with others who have similar interests and varying skill sets. They also set up lectures with people who are in the film industry so that we have classes on various subjects. Recently we had one on directing a music video that was put on by Patrick Kriwanek from the Berkeley Digital Film Institute. Being a member of Scary Cow will give you an opportunity to work directly with people who have experience in all levels of film production. A lot of our members join with little to no experience in working on a film set. Some have very extensive experience in a particular area and are looking to expand or experiment in other areas. One of our members will be teaching a course at the BDFI on securing talent and casting for your projects. Like I said we really believe that the best way to learn is to pick up the theory and then go practice it. Our members have been getting more and more ambitious in the films they are producing. We've already had one 3D film made (http://vimeo.com/20671019), a bunch that are currently making the festival rounds, and two features have come out of our group. I'm currently working on a project that will begin principle photography October 2nd where we are using SAG actors and are in negotiations with Golden Gate Fields (horse racing track) to secure the rights to shoot there and include footage of their races. As primarily a DP and camera op I'm supper stoked that I've had my work reviewed and gotten some really good advise and feedback from people like Cinematographers Jacques Haitkin (Nightmare on Elm Street, Fast Five, X-Men: First Class).

I'd say come check out one of the info sessions, it will be worth it. If you don't decide to sign up it won't cost you anything and you may make some good contacts with other local people interested in film making. Shoot me an email if you want more info.

Filmmaking Program for teens in Bay Area!

Filmmaking Program for teens in Bay Area!

Hey everyone, just saw this thread and wanted to let all of you know about a program I work for that (hopefully) totally fits what you're looking for. We're an advanced filmmaking program for Bay Area teens. The program is called The Factory, and we're a part of the Bay Area Video Coalition. We help teens produce short films during the school year, and over the summer we provide an opportunity to get a paid summer job working to create short films for Bay Area non-profits and organizations. Our program is free and we provide everything you'll need - we expect hard work and good results, but it's also a lot of fun. Last year our work played in dozens of national and international film festivals, and took home prizes and top honors at about a dozen festivals. We also help our students with college preparation and applications. For more information, or to apply please check out www.bavc.org/factory. Also feel free to email us with questions, etc. Best -- Ewen W.

A young person has more opportunities and talent to direct film. You should not dream your film, you should make it! If no one hires you, use the camera on your phone and post everything on YouTube. You have to try to make movies with low budget first.
