YOU TUBE SUCKS; use this instead

[Elton]

It looks like a cool service, but I have a hard time figuring out what's really going on with the "HD" content. They have a nice tutorial for encoding, but what I'm seeing still looks super-compressed. It's certainly tons better than YouTube but it's missing some wow for me.

It looks like they want you to encode HD at 720p with h.264 at 3000-5000kbs, which should pretty good for most stuff, but what I'm seeing on their HD channels looks like its been crushed to a much lower bitrate. Disjecta's "Snow Motion" didn't look anywhere near as good as the wmv's he usually posts from his site.

Am I off-base here?

No, you're right Elton. Vimeo HD is recompressed. Considering how low a bandwidth it can be streamed on it's not bad though.

If you want really good quality stage6.com is propably a better choice.

I'm so bummed Stage6 is shutting down.

vimeo.com is awesome (here is a test upload of a cocaine shot I did to see it's quality: http://vimeo.com/370840)

But DIVX was my very favorite.

Damb.
