I have just became aware of this; maybe a lil late to the party ?

Shameless plug to direct traffic to my blog, but also a really killer (not widely known?) url string.

&fmt=18

 :)

Sorry, but I don't see any difference between the 2 links in your blog.
Really? There's a substantial difference in clarity; wonder if it's due to your browser or something.

Try pausing both at 00:25, and look at the guy's face in the right 1/3 with the hat. In the FM18 it looks like high-def vs. the "regular" version.

Great find, John. I didn't know about this, but now it'll be mandatory for watching the Hasselhoff "Jump In My Car" video. Oooh, we could use it for high-def rickrolling too.

they must store several versions or use a better encoder to deliver the content. I looked at a video I posted a few weeks ago and the difference was real.

Great "Hack"!!

I definitely see the difference in your grabs, but I don't watching the videos. Bizarre.

I echo this. Why does this work? Why would youtube have different versions stored and keep one hidden from most users?

When they made their deal with AppleTV about a year ago, they started encoding at higher quality h.264, but only for AppleTV users. The code must be the flag for YouTube to recognize an AppleTV request...at least I think.

Well there's a line below that says "watch this video in lower quality for faster playback", so it can't be magic. Hmmm....

Batutta may be right, but didn't youtube announce a better quality youtube sometime in the future? (or maybe I'm thinking HD) Or perhaps they trying out the better compression, getting ready for a change?
