"You Try One" -- A New Short Film

That was awesome! Sounds like a conversation I would have with my friends.

Not sure if you're a Kevin Smith fan, but it really reminded of a conversation they would have in Clerks. Pretty damn cool!

im new to the film world and dvx100 world
i know that the dvx100b shoots in a 4:3 ratio but how did u goet urs to be 16:9

the DVX can shoot 16:9 too. you just set the menu to "Squeez" mode.
it's only for the DVX100a & 100B tho.

oh i see
but when its squeezed its probably looks a little stretched :/
but its still cool
i want the dvx100b soo badly

for anyone who saw my previous video "holy smokes!" which i recently posted on here, do you think the acting and audio improved in this one?

Definitely.
Better dialogue, better acting, better audio!
Did you do ADR?
Nice dolly move in on them (skateboard?) Any opportunities for more later?

Good job man!

Thanks, that's good to hear that it improved. I actually didn't do any ADR, it was all oktava mk012 mic... it seems a little off sync because of vimeo... it's all synced up on facebook. The dolly was actually a homemade dolly setup. It was so rushed we didn't have anytime to anything later on. thanks!

I definitely think there was lots of improvement all around. The dialogue was tighter and acting was way better too. It just flowed nicely. Did you give them the food to make the acting easier? I remember watching the primer commentary with shane carruth and he was talking about how he did that to help an inexperienced actor perform better in one of the scenes.

haha they actually bought the food themselves, which was good for me, seeing as I have no money :D but yeah haha food makes the world of difference. Luckily it only took us 1 1/2 - 2hrs to shoot, so I wouldn't have had to worry about food anyway.

groveChuck, yes the oktava is amazing. We tried to get it in as close as possible on the tighter shots, but still had it pretty close on wider shots. It's nice because you can still get some decent sound out of it when it's a bit away. It's decent outside, I like it.

If anyone has facebook, I've uploaded it to facebook where the audio is properly synced, and the overall quality is a little bit better.

i really liked this one. i will say that for me the music took away from the mood of the film. if you were going for a kevin smith style, or a judd apatow like scene (which i believe was mentioned earlier, in a good way) then you might want to utilized ambient sounds, they usually do that well. but to be honest, the music was the only problem for me, and it was a small one, didnt take too much away at all.
nice work, i would love to see some more with these two guys, they seem like theyre improving, even though i havent seen past work haha, i just get that feel.

How close would you say you had the Oktava on the wide and tight shots?
And yeah, perhaps some parts without music, then the music could cue a shift.
And maybe an extreme wide or 2? It was a great location with the steps and columns!
Chuck

Thanks guys! Yes i can definitely see where you were coming from with the music, and I was really hesitant of it, taking away from the actual comedy and all, but I had my reasons to use it -- mostly dealing with slight technical audio issues. I wasn't really going for a Kevin Smith or Judd Apatow vibe, I was just keeping it simple and dialogue driven. I definitely definitely wanted to get a couple more extreme wides, but we were running and gunning so hard that I totally forgot haha. Thanks so much for the critique though, these are some things i'll keep in mind on my next projects.

so realistic!
only thing in my opinion that took away from the feel was the off axis close ups but the audio quality was unbelieveable!

care to elaborate more on these off axis close ups? Do you mean that I jumped the line? I'm not so sure if I know what you mean, and I'd like to see if i can improve it in my next short.
