You already have an HD DVX100/A!

At least if Juan can get this to work.  I was just checking out his website, and in the forums section he made mention of taking full advantage of the green CCD pixel shift and outputing an HD image.  Check out the thread here.

Look at the bottom of the second post.

I didn't get an extended warranty with my DVX100a so by January my warranty will have passed, no problems thus far (knock knock knock), so if Juan gets this going who needs a new camera.

Re: You already have an HD DVX100/A!

Whaooooooooooooooooooooooo !!!

1546x988 with the dvx !! :o

Just incredible.

This guy is a Genius.

I keep my fingers crossed.

Re: You already have an HD DVX100/A!

I sincerely hope this can get off the beta-test phase and become commercially available. I can't imagine the difference it would make for indie film production. Throw in the upcoming Century anamorphic adapter and a ton of Hard Disc space, and you've got a full blown digital film camera for a 10th of the price!*

*1/10th price is a guesstimate based on:
DVX100 $3500
Andromeda $1000?
Century anamorphic adapter $1500?
Lots of external Hard Disc space $750
TOTAL: around $6750

For comparison:
Panasonic AJ-HDC27F VariCam
U.S. List Price $65,900.00 :o

Granted, I'm sure the VariCam's image is superior to the future so-called HDVX100, but for the price of 1 VariCam you can get 10 HDVX cameras!!!!!!

Re: You already have an HD DVX100/A!

im so confused, what is andromeda? do you have to open up your camera and mess with the hardware?

Re: You already have an HD DVX100/A!

Oh, it's coming :D

With regard to your question concerning whether the Camera hardware would have to be modified: yes and no.

Yes, the camera has to be opened and several wires are attached which then lead out to an external box.

No, there is no actual modification of the internal hardware.

but YES it WILL void your warranty!

Re: You already have an HD DVX100/A!

hmmm id unno if id risk that, id slap myself if the camera got fried or something

Re: You already have an HD DVX100/A!

I believe that the idea is that this will be a commercial product designed to work VERY well. I imagine when all is said and done and it reaches market it will be highly unlikely to "fry" your camera. That said you would have to pay for any camera malfunction repair yourself after installation. Is it worth it to have a pro HD camera? :o

Re: You already have an HD DVX100/A!

How does this compare to the new Sony HDV? Better, worse, same?

I am really looking forward to footage from this that has been color corrected. Everything they have on their website looks horrible, I understand it is a RAW image, but I can't wait to see it playing on my computer. All of these numbers don't mean too much to me, but that HDV footage, especially the stuff with the 3:2 AE pulldown looks awesome!

That I understand. Any thoughts on a comparison between the two?

Re: You already have an HD DVX100/A!

HDV is HUGELY compressed. This mod will give absolutely pure data - inifinitely better than HDV could ever do. If Juan also manages to get HD output (which he has discussed) then the deal will be even better!

HDV sucks really. I'm glad Panasonic didn't join in!

Re: You already have an HD DVX100/A!

This is a standard-def product. As I understand it, they're just discussing the possibilities of what it would look like after it's been up-rezzed in post.

I've asked to join the beta-test team, so hopefully I'll know more about it soon.

Re: You already have an HD DVX100/A!

I'm not sure Barry. I think Andromeda is current SD but Juan certainly mentions the possibility of sucking HD out of this thing:

" So basically, we can obtain a HD image that is much better than just upressing SD, because there is actually more detail captured than 773x494. Technically, if you look at the location of all the sensors on the 3 CCDs, and where information is available, it's actually 1546x988. "

Re: You already have an HD DVX100/A!

But the chips only have so many pixels on 'em. The DVX is not an HD camera. Any HD extraction is going to be some sort of digital interpolation... you cannot get something for nothing... I mean, maybe it'll do an up-rez automatically, but it's going to have to do something to get to high-def resolution.

Hopefully they'll put me in the beta program and I can learn what the whole thing is really all about! :)

Re: You already have an HD DVX100/A!

this is so entertaining !!
has someone set fire to that canabis leaf pic ? ;D
Juan - stop posting stills of your balcony. - It's only a matter of time before the HD Camera Manufacturers Association or panasonic identifies where it is , then . . . . . "did you hear a noise then ? . . . . " lol ;)

Re: You already have an HD DVX100/A!

Quite right - you can't get free resolution. Juan was, I am fairly sure, talking about offsetting the green CCD to create a pixel shifted "HD" frame (not a true HD CCD but the look is the same really).

I'll have to email Juan and ask him specifically.
