GH4 Yosemite through a GH4, V-LOG L, 8mm Fishe-eye

I used a variable ND filter and ETTR, protecting the highlights, then adjusted exposure and lifted highlights in post. In 4K the shadows are noisy, but with a little massaging and then down-converting to 1080, they look pretty good. It took a lot of work - way more work than I would typically want to do on a "real" project. And had there been a subject moving in and out of shadow it wouldn't have worked at all, because I relied on both rectilinear and circular masks.

Kind of fun to look at where it started.

EDIT: Ugh...the forum does something nasty to the color when it makes jpegs!

Nice work.

There is very little banding in skies. Did you use dithering or something else to hide banding? Dyn range is good but there is some noise or posterization or grain. Images are not clean even when downsampled to half.

Very impressive, I was thinking to avoid V LOG while being a newbie to GH4 though the more I see the stuff coming from awesome guys like you the more I am tempted to use V LOG :)

I did add film grain, but there was no real banding present that I could see on the majority of the shots.

For sure. I pushed these very hard in post. The GH4 is noisy in shadows, and always will be. V-LOG L doesn't change that. Personally, I find this level of noise more than acceptable.

I feel compelled to say, again, that these shots required a TON of work in post. For my normal shooting, I am not using V-LOG L. It's too hard to monitor in camera and has some pretty big PQ issues when recorded internally.

How'd you like the PIX? Is there a dramatic difference vs recording internally that you can see?
"Dramatic" is hard to quantify.

Personally, until trying V-LOG L I found the GH4's internal recording to be very good. Perfectly capable of doing 90%+ of what I needed to do, including very clean chroma keys. On rare occasions the limits of the 8-bit depth signal were noticeable to the trained eye (such as banding in the sky) but that has been rare in my experience.

For V-LOG L, though, it's a different story. Expanding that massively crushed log image from a compromised 8-bit signal has proven problematic for me...especially the chroma encoding error. And that's not to mention how hard it is to judge exposure.

I found that using the PIX-E5 was a big help. The extra bit depth made a demonstrable difference in V-LOG L PQ, and being able to monitor with a LUT made exposure and focus a much more reasonable endeavor.

Thanks. This has been my experience so far with the GH4 and now with V-Log, but haven't tried external recorder yet. I'm going to rent the PIX and give it a try!
