Yet another shoulder rig - zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz...

I'd rather see something like what this guy did to his redrock rig:

He just added the spring rod from a DV Multirig to the bottom of his Redrock/DIY setup.

This is what I managed to build after being disgusted with every existing design:

i just ordered the Red Rock microFinder Loupe Accessory kit to go with my hoodloupe 3.0 and my Canon t2i but i just thought of something, the LCD on the T2i goes all the way to the far left of the body unlike the 7D/5dmkii which have buttons on the left..... is the far left of my lcd going to be cut off because the red rock accessory is trying to center up the hoodloupe 3.0 more?? does that make sense?

A counterweight is absolutely essential. Ideally, I should be able to take my hands off the camera and have a steady shot.

Based on the type of gear a person would use on a DSLR rig would it better to have the weight in 1lb or 2lb sizes? It would seem you would need a alot of weights in they where 1lb each. 2-3lb each might be better?

Hey Steve,

Is it possible to stack 1 pound weights that can separate based on what a person my need.

Chris Santucci
I like the monitor. What is the brand and how does it perform?

Thanks

Here is a couple shots of my rig with out the camera displaying follow focus operation while maintaining 2 hand support of the rig. I have a grip that can turns horizontal under neath the follow focus nob so that you can maintain support of the rig while still racking focus.

If to chose, I'd rather have a little bit too much counterweight than too little. But DSLR setups can be so different, difficult to answer.

Yeah, I see there's a difference with the LCD placement. The RRM Hoodloupe holder actually offers the ability to shift from side to side, so it should still work on the T2i.

Not bad until you put a 20mm lens on and see the rods. Also, all the weight is up front, especially when you mount a monitor onto that setup.

I wasn't concerned with the rig/rods.. I was talking about the spring loaded waist brace. That would be a nice feature for any shoulder rig IMHO.

Hey Steve,

I was thinking we might be able to use the A frame from the handle. The tool is already built and it will allow the weight to be either above the rails or under the rails. I ordered some 3.000 x .500 stainless rounds, to play around with. I was thinking along the lines of overmolding them with a soft black plastic so they won't be reflective and they won't bang up anyones gear (or anyones head for that matter). This will allow for multiple stacking, put some index pins to make it easier to stack them.

That looks like a winner. The black coating is really a good idea. I'm very interested in this add on. It will definitely take my rig to the next level Steve.

Thanks

I'm 6'7'' and really can't even use a shoulder mount unless I'm sitting on something. I find my self just holding the camera most of the time for hand held.

No kidding. I'm 6'7 as well and do the same thing. I was thinking about getting the redrock shoulder mount and some extra rods and trying that.

what do you mean by centered then ?

I have designed my rig from scratch and only got flack for choosing thinner rails

I chose rails suitable to the forces involved in a light camera

I only chose rails at all because I realised how good they were once you consider different lenght of lens etc - all my early was with L section or flat

Of course anyone can draw a super sculpted thing that would have a $500k set up cost to build and be out of date before it came to market becuase it would nt fit this weeks DLSR

DSLRs are terriibly unergonomic - mainly due to the screen location

A sony handy cam with a s35 chip and interchanable lenses is what is needed

Product design student are probably as useful as the person who approached me for work fresh out of their photo degree today - not useful

I would try your gear, if you were in the U.S.

you should consider under slinging your rig cam low monitor high

Im a puny 6'5 :)

F you both... I'm 5'6" (and the tallest in my family... Mom is 4'8")! :Drogar-BigGrin(DBG)
At least I never have to duck going through a doorway.

I just pissed myself laughing not sure why but this pic just looks wrong:

sorry ill grow up now....

Seriously, it's the exertion in the guys face and the arm placement that is entertaining. If this was a scene out of a movie it would be definitely a phallic symbol. Blame my theatre history studies for noticing that implication.

My 1st thought for myself if I wanted to shoot from an under the arm angle would be to try something like this, (see pic). Get the attaching screws and guitar strap and your, 'good to go'.

A plate for an V-mount battery would be great too. The battery mounts you can order anywhere so if you were to just offer a plate/mount setup, one could attach their own plate and battery setup to act as a counter weight.

5'5". I feel your pain.

My boss is 5'2" and he almost looks like a mini-Jim Jannard. Its kind of funny actually. lol.

Also, what's with all of the iPhone stabilizers? I really don't see the point in making your iPhone movies smooth. Its going to look like crap either way.
