This second 11pm image spot in the campaighn was a lot of work running around town trying to catch up with the nightside reporters. These guys are hard to nail down so I had to get to them. They didn't have the night off to play with me :)
All the reporter shots are with the Panasonic AF-100. The main lens I used was the Panasonic Lumix Vario 12-35. The on-camera lines I shot with the Voigtlander 25mm. Love that lens!
I decided to go super basic with the camera setup knowing that I was going to give a lot of movement to the shots. No rig was used and I used the on board EVF in B&W with focus in red on. It all worked really well.

I didn't shoot the time-lapse shots. We purchased them. They look really great and added a nice touch to the spot. Really breaks it up nice.

Excellent work as usual Eric! How do you get such crisp and sharp colors with the AF100? What are you settings for these kinda shoots?

Thanks guys.

Jon its all done in post with Magic Bullet Colorista II. I shoot fairly flat. Not super flat since the camera doesn't have a log setting but just try to keep the noise down a little more by dialing down saturation. I use Barry's settings from wayyyyyyy back and just leave it. I had some issues with white balance on several of the shots but was easy to fix.

I use a s-curve to get the film like contrast and HSL to dial in the skin tones. Than go back and forth with the 3-way to balance then check skin tones again. I really try hard to get the skin tones right and Colorista has a great skin tone checker to help achieve this. I love the skin tone overlay!

Another tip is using the HSL tool to boost certain colors you want to saturate. This is a great way to enhance the individual color channels. I like to work the yellow and green channels to fix dull trees and grass. Really makes them pop and look more lush.

Colorista is so good I just don’t see a reason to go outside of the NLE and use a dedicated application for the work I do. I’ve played around with other grading tools, and they’re way more powerful, but I can get the results I need so fast with Colorista II that I just stick with it.

Also Colorista II works so fast with Premiere Pro CS6 it’s just great. The only tool that doesn’t work is the keyer and that will hopefully be addressed by Adobe soon because that is a very powerful mask tool I liked to use in FCP7.

Grading is fun to me and less like work. I get a kick when I have a producer in the edit bay and show them the before and after on a shot. They always go wow! Erik smiles. I know a lot of people like to talk down AVCHD but I push it around and get what I want. Sure I would like more bits to play with but who wouldn't.

It's funny. I work at a news station in Chicago and when I see the reporters doing longer form packages, I often wonder why they don't just buy a little camera like this to make it stand out more. In my opinion, the AF100 is more pleasing to look at then they're $10,000+ shoulder mounted cams.

Nice job!

lovely work as ever Eric - Panny should use you to help promote their cameras as you really know your way around them and push them to the limit. Keep it up, Sparky
