GH2 Yet another GH2 hack low light test

Its a little grainy but usable, some places I shot as high as 1600 but things really go downhill after 800.

Thanks for posting. Some cinematic and rather clean scenes, especially the ones in the end. Could you describe the process a bit, the lens that you used and how you processed the material in editing software?

Thanks-
I shot this in nostalgic -2 on everything in the hopes of squeezing out every last drop of dynamic range, to take it a step further I then transcoded with 5drgb to prores444. Edited it in premere and graded in davinci resolve.

I really could not do much in davinci but to try and control the highlights and in some cases slightly bring up the shadow detail but for most of it there is very little diference between the ungraded footage and graded footage. I don't like noise so I did not bring up the shadows.

The cleaner shots were in the abandoned arcade, I shot them at a lower ISO and had a lot more to play with in davinci, the look is a coming from added contrast and desaturation.

The lens I used were Zeiss ZF 35 f/2, ZF 50 f/1.4 with a little tonkina 11-16 and Panasonic 20mm. Most of the shots were with the ZF 50 f/1.4, I am really into that dreamy look it dose wide open you really can see it on the hill with the circular lanterns.

Thanks for all the info, I will now have a second look. I could not avoid noticing distinct "Carl Zeiss at full aperture look" in many of the shots. The post production process is also interesting. In some of the shots I might have tried to stretch the black a bit more for added noise reduction, but it's close to the cleanest already. Also, the least amount of diffusion filter on the Zeiss lens might help rolling off highlights and add some cinematic value. The last two or three scenes are almost like from a movie, practical available light helps a lot.

Interesting, why are there Hong Kong signs? I thought it actually was HK for a minute there.
Having a fast aperture lens helps I suppose.
I just gotten to use Neat Video Pro, does a helluva job reducing grain. But really takes long to render. And I'm even using SSDs.

Another question, how much did you average on bit rate? I can't ever seem to go over 50mbs with this Ipowell patch.

At 1600 ISO I get nasty horizontal banding that ruins the image, how do you get around it?

HK tourism bureau will always have something on exhibition Its a little discombobulating because this event is in taiwan but I liked the shoot enough to put it in anyway. I really want to give Neat a try but the render time comment dosent sound too promising.

I have not checked out the bit rate but my guess is it was low for this shoot as it was dark and I was shooting wide open all the time.

Nice job. What is the backstory on the light festival?
It marks the end of the Lunar New year, traditionally all the kids would make cool looking lanterns and then walk around town. Now a days its marked with huge firework displays and massive lanterns sponsored by large corporations...... I am not a big fan but its a cool place to shoot. I think that is way I made this video so downbeat.
