Yet another 24P Advanced - 24P timeline question

I've read all the posts I could find. I've read everything I can on the internet, including the great article by Michael Phillips on 24P.com. And there's still problems with my 24P DVDs.

I shoot in 24P Advanced.

I edit in Avid Xpress by simply creating a "new project" and selecting the 23.976p NTSC format from the first drop-down menu.

Then I capture the footage through firewire.

That's all I do to set-up my 24P timeline before I start editing. As far as I know that's all I need to do. No other settings needed to configure Avid for this capture and editing process.

Next, I edit my footage and I'm ready to export it in a QT Reference file so that I can squeeze it using Sorensen Squeeze.

I use the Sorensen Squeeze settings from Michael Phillips's article and then squeeze directly from the QT Reference file.

Then I burn a DVD using Ulead Movie Factory. My understanding is that once the footage has been properly compressed by Sorensen, any DVD authoring program can then take that footage to make a 24P DVD.

Problem is my DVD's are soooo pixelated and jerky it's not even funny. I get none of these issues when shooting 24P Normal and editing in a 30i NTSC, squeezing with Sorensen and then burning a DVD.

Question: any suggestions as to what I might need to adjust to get a professional output to 24P DVD?

And am I limited in how I can output my final 24P film from Avid if I'm using an older version of Xpress? Sounds like I might not be able to make a digital cut using this process.

(Some smart dude out there should publish a guide like Barry's DVX book on this entire topic, since it seems to cause so many people grief. )

Cheers!

Where in these steps is the MPEG encoding taking place and are you building a 12 frame GOP?

Your assumption that "...any DVD authoring program can then take the footage to make a 24P DVD" is likely incorrect.

What are you attempting to accomplish by using Sorensen Squeeze?

You already have 720 x 480 frames so what is the purpose of this step in the chain?

Skip the Sorenson conversion step since it's just creating another compression step (quality loss) on the way to a DVD. You DVD software shoudl be able to take the original QT movie and convert it.

Ah. I thought I was required to squeeze it with Sorensen (to MPEG2) before authoring the DVD. I'll try it with the QT reference file directly.
