Yes I'm afraid I have another adaptor.

I came pretty close to buying it a while ago. Seems pretty good. The one draw back that I remember is that I don't think they will let you buy the high quality achromat with the DIY guide. I think they send you a cheapo macro. I'm pretty sure that you have to be an M2 owner to purchase their achromat. Anyway, I don't remember 100% what the deal was so make sure you look into what all it comes with.

Actually, Snodart, it looks like Redrock changed the rules for some of their items. I’ve read recently that the M2 GG (Cinescreen) and their achromats can be purchased as standalones.

Amazing

Amazing

I just spent almost two days reading all the thread to here and I feel I know you guys! Great job, it was a whole saga, with ups and downs! discoveries, etc. Amazing. My sincere congrats to Edweirdo, the main character who inspired so many people here, it really moved me to see how one by one were achieving their goals and he´s been there helping everyone.
Marlene and Snodart were main characters too! though I couldn´t see any of Marlene´s videos (bad links) Will you post them again please? There was also an antagonist (on my view), going against the spirit of the forum, the guy wanting to sell his GG and not giving instructions to the others. I wonder if you guys realize it, it will make a great script! a tip on the hat to all of you.
Mikewill, as I read the whole (almost) thread, the pdf file you`re looking for is at
http://www.savefile.com/files/4381890
As for me... I´m getting the HVX200, different size for everything, so maybe all the instructions will change. :-( I guess I won´t build one ... Hey, Edweirdo, do you still have your #1? still for sale?

Best to all of you and don´t stop posting the results!

A last question, living both in arizona, did you guys, Edweirdo and Marlene get to know each other in person? ... I wonder

Wow, that is pretty cool. They must have change it. I know for sure that when I was pondering over the M2 they did not sell their GG and macro alone except for replacement. If that is the case, then I would bet that their DIY guide would be a pretty good buy.

ElTuerto, welcome and nice work in reading this massive thread! It truly is a book.

Eltuerto- welcome to the madness. Def check out Marlenes video- very helpfull.

I also upgraded the Asian macro to a CO diopter (a few months ago- before my leave of absence). I also shortened the adapter housing be trimming some of the PVCs threads, and modified the base.

And here it is with my mattebox :love4: yes- a little overkill I know but what can I say!

Will post some footage soon. Take care yawl!!

hey ed... how are you able to keep your adapter the same length.. if not shorter than the original. using just the co+7.. ive been experimenting with my co+7.. first off, i just cant get in close enough. im still vinegetting all over the place. also.. ive seem to loose alot of depth of field.. any ideas of what could be wrong?

version 2 is shorter than version 1. By almost 1". Please decribe your setup in detail starting at your SLR lens and ending at the DVX's front threads. Please include parts and measurements if you have them.

well.. heres what id like to do.. and this is what i use to have with the +10 and +4 macro...
nibco 2" female adapter
nibco 2" male adapter

so basically... nikon lens mount- male adapter-female adapter w+4 macro inside.. then p-ring- +10 macro and connect to dvx..
but now im skipping the 2 macros and have a +7 in there..
i cant get in all the way and im loosing the dof i use to have

The macro might effect how the overall image looks and wheter or not you can focus on the GG/focusing screen with your cam, but it shouldn't effect the DOF. The DOF is dependent on the size of the aperture in the 35mm lens.

Ed, how in the heck did you make your adapter shorter after going from +14 down to +7? When I switched to the CO +7 I had to make the distance between the macro and the focusing screen greater. New version looks great by the way... very clean. Are you going to spill the beans about the canon focusing screen or what?
:)

I did spill the beans on that screen-

post: http://www.dvxuser.com/V6/showpost.php?p=566187&postcount=899

Here is one I found on ebay:

http://cgi.ebay.com/LIKE-NEW-IN-BOX...ryZ29969QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

This auction is for an F1 type C screen (overall laser matte no grid) which can be seen here in the Canon Screen PDF:

http://www.mir.com.my/rb/photograph...sources/SLRs/ae1pgrm/html/issues/srnchart.pdf

I should have made this correction though: these screens are for the F1 series (not the A series like I thought) and should work great for a DOF project:
Type C
Type J
Type K

Now re: the size of the ED35 version2- the space between my CO+7 and my D screen is still the same. My adapter is shorter because I trimmed most of the excess threads off the PVC and changed the DVX mount. That totaled about 3/4". Why I didnt need to move farther away when I switched to the CO I have no idea... but I will look into it.

Ahh, I missed the post about the canon screen, sorry... and thanks.

I couldn't get focus from the DVX without an extra +1 in addition to the CO +7. Strange that you can. Maybe different lengths in the step-up/down rings makes just enough difference.

Anyway, thanks.

With the DVX, you need to place your focusing screen about 130mm (4.5 - 5 inches) away from the front of the CO +7 for optimal viewing with no vignetting, or aid it with a ~100mm EFL PCX lens (flat side toward the screen) to shorten the distance.

At any distance closer than about 130mm, though your eye will not detect it, the CO will generate 3-5% distortion from the center.

Introducing a PCX may complicate things -- a little blue fringing.

But I am using an additional macro to get focus. Now I understand your earlier question. I was using a +1 like you but found that I could see a teeny bit of screen frame in under scan. So I used a +2. See below for the ED35v2 setup:

e35v2.JPG

So I know what some people are thinking...OMG :crybaby: You ruining the CO Achromat with a cheap +2 macro!!! Well... yes and no.

5% yes
95% no

So let me ramble on a bit about macros. The +2 is very weak when it comes to CA. Not only that, remember this- a close up lens is sharpest and cleanest at the center and CA occurs at the edges. Now the +2 is a 72mm macro, and it is being stepped down to the 58mm CO Achro. That means that much of the edges of the +2 aren’t even being seen by the DVX. When zoomed in to focus the adapter, the DVX lens uses the best part of the +2 macro- the center. This is why (to my eye- and I am very critical) I see virtually no CA with this setup.

Sure there are those that say using any cheap macro in the design at all is no good and that it negates the high quality Century Optics Achromat. Well that’s just plain snobbery. It will not negate the benefits of the CO +7. Yes the +10 Asian got smeary but the weaker powered close ups look great (mine by the way is not Asian- its Universal brand- if that makes any diff). It provides just enough "bump" to get the DVX into sharp focus on the screen, and with VERY little CA.

"But Ed, you said "very little" and "virtually no" so that means there is CA isn’t there?" Yes there is. On a res chart I can see some faint CA (which no one else seems to see but I can). Its very little and very subtle, but it is there if you look hard enough. Its gone when I remove the +2, but I need it to get the DVX to work with it. Unless you can only go with achromats, there will always be some CA with close-ups. However the average viewer does not notice any difference. We notice it because we built it, and have our noses against the screen- ignoring the subject matter and concentrating on minute anomalies.

Snodart, you should (as I am) look into the Canon 500D 72mm Macro lens. It is also an achromat, made up of two elements to prevent distortion.

Ed, great points. My current design only uses the CO + 7 and is a bit long. I somehow missed that you had a 72mm + 2 on yours. I haven't slept much lately.

I believe I will give it a try with a +2 or +1 again and see how much shorter I can make the adapter and also compare the images. I'm sure that, as you stated, it won't be much if any, but I wouldn't be able to sleep at night if I din't compare the two.

Snodart- I edited my last post. Check out the Canon 72mm 500D as a possible replacement for the +2 close up. As for buying one I'm on the fence as the CA is so small, but it would lay any CA issue to rest. Speaking of rest- try to get some :) I'm goin to bed...
