Yes, another firestore/hvx200 topic

Hey guys,

This is my first time posting, but I've been lurking the boards here for a few months. The company I work for recently purchased 2 firestore drives, and after a few issues(dropouts, which is now fixed, and a bad battery) the drives seem to work perfect. However, I'm having a timecode issue!

When I press record, the HVX200's timecode does not move at all. It just stays put. The FS-100 is set to TC EXT because they said if you want to do pulldown it has to be set at that.

My question is, how do I get the timecode to start on the HVX200 when I press record? Is it the fact that I have no P2 cards the reason it is not starting (kind of defeats the purpose of getting the firestores huh)? Doing free run timecode doesn't work for us, and the search function on this forum didn't yeild any results for me. Any ideas? I set the fs-100 to Rec run, but I can't do pulldown apparently, and importing, there was a problem with timecode matching between clips. There were off by roughly 6 or so frames, and I couldn't get Final Cut to stitch them together.

I'll be calling Panasonic tomorrow, but I thought I'd run it by you guys first.

Thanks for your help,

Tim

Make sure the FS-100 is set to Tapeless.
Make sure the HVX200 is set in the Other Functions menu to 1394 Control = EXT, and 1394 CMD SEL = REC_P.

If you have it set to only record to an external device, you won't see any time code running on the HVX's screen. It'll only show TC when you are recording to P2 cards or tape. You'll have to judge your TC during the shoot from the FS-100 display.

Also, in the FS-100 SETUP menu, make sure you are set to TC EXT, so it will read the TC from the HVX. And make sure you're set in the FS-100 to Non-Drop TC. That way you will have ALL the DVCPRO-HD metadata for FCP to do the pulldowns.

Hey,

I appreciate the response. I did as you suggested, but it does not seem like the FS-100 is receiving timecode from the HVX. I press the display button on the Firestore, until it shows 720/24p, and the timecode is not moving. It shows exactly what the HVX shows on its screen.

However, the counter on the FS-100 is counting up, but what ends up happening is the clips I put in Final Cut still have the same starting timecode, which is confusing.

So, at least I know the HVX isn't going to show the Timecode running, but the FS-100 doesn't show the timecode moving either. Perhaps there is something else I am missing?

I appreciate the help,

Tim

Update:

So we talked to a Panasonic Rep, who had a Firestore, and he had the same problem. Like the Firestore manual says, if the timecode is not running, the FS-100 records the same timecode number in each recorded frame. Which seems to be the problem. Every new clip that is created starts with the same timecode!

The Panasonic rep is baffled as we are. The only thing we could discover is that if you have a P2 card in the slot, the timecode runs, on both the hvx200 and the firestore. So it appears, unless both the Rep and ourselves have set up the camera incorrectly (even though I've followed all the steps), that for some reason the hvx200 is generating timecode for the fs-100.

If anyone wants to test, hit display on the Fs-100 until it shows 720/24p and the timecode counter below. Press record, and see if the timecode on there works.

Unless you have media in the camera, the time code on the HVX will not run (except in free mode).
If you need Time code to Rec Run, you'll have to use the time code in the FS-100. All the settings and options are in the FS-100 Setup menu.
(Make sure you toggle the display function button on the FS-100 to display time code (listed as "DV NTSC")
Hope this helps-

If you are in HD mode, the source display will show the frame rate the FS-100 is receiving. You may need to refresh the screen (cycle the DISP display) if it still shows DV-NTSC. This will be fixed in the pending thumbnail release due next week.
