Yacht Restoration School

This was so much fun to film.

Shot in one day at the International Yacht Restoration School in Newport, RI. I felt like all I had to do was show up because everything looked so cool.

let me know what you think.

We did things a little different with the audio as well. We welcomed a Sound Devices T702 to the production family :)

Really well done! Some of my favourite AF100 footage so far.

Keep up the great work,

Kegan

REALLY enjoyed this. Brought back many fond memories of catboat sailing long ago. Really glad to see the class surviving. Thanks for sharing.

Love it!
Love the photography.
Love the editing.
Love the subject.
Love the guitar picking.

Nitpick? I might have cut out a few "umms" and "rephrasing his thoughts moments" while still leaving enough to retain a natural speaking feel (though that's obviously a matter of taste).
And some natsound up full? Scraping, banging, sanding, to immerse us even deeper in the workshop?

You hit a home run with the young woman's interview- her enthusiasm and joy were clear (and you were lucky to have the mixer at the end when the background noise and her speaking level went up!).

I see you used Nikon, Olympus and Voigtlander lenses- which of each? (Voigt 25, I assume...)

And, of course... settings, please? (it's a beautiful look) Much grading?
Very, very nicely done, thanks for sharing!

Thanks Everyone!

Groovechuck - Seriously thanks! The guy was really tough to cut he talked...a lot. Not a bad thing, just tough to edit haha.

On this shoot I used the Olympus 14-54 2.8-3.5, The Voightlander 25mm .95, and the Rokinon 85mm 1.4. I think I might have lied about using a nikon. I do have a Nikon 50mm 1.4 AiS and a Tokina 28-70 2.6-2.8.

For settings I used the abel range setting. Color corrected was done with Colorista and graded with looks. I almost always set up a custom look based on a setting that kinda works. I can't remember which setting is was based on, but it had some diffusion and a sky filter oddly enough. We shot this on a cloudy day and the light temp changed quite a bit throughout the day. That ended up being a little tricky on the post side but I think I got it to work.

One of the things that helped a lot, I think, was premiere. It sounds weird, but I think you can push footage further in premiere since it works in a 32 bit color space. I don't remember ever being able to push avchd footage that far in FCP. Not sure it's true, but that's how it felt to me.

I'm on the road right now but when I get back I'll try to post some before and after stills and some more detailed settings.

I loved it. Well done. Too bad you only had that day and couldn't show a completed boat on the water. Would enjoy seeing more if you go back.

Enjoyed the piece very much. Great subject with lots of visual opportunities.
I pretty much agree with groveChucks comments.

Now that I'm back home I checked out which settings I used and my look was based off the Bistrocity setting. I turned the diffusion down, tamed the lift-gamma-gain setting and brought down the mid-boost on the curves setting. Most of the preset looks are a little much for me. I have a tendency to either tweak the settings to make them less extreme or use the blending slider to bring back some of the original. I don't have a reference monitor yet so I work mostly off the scopes, then check it one a few different monitors I have at home.

I always take the criticism here pretty seriously because it's a really good group of creative professionals. It's a great way to get feedback that I almost always try to incorporate in future projects. Now, if I could just get Shooter to like something :)

Thanks again everyone!

I absolutely loved the look and feel of the piece. Wonderful guitar background.

The only sad part for me was that some 40+ years ago, I spent several years racing a wooden sailboat and the piece brought up many memories of the wonderful time I had . . . . when I wasn't swearing at the damn thing for all the work it took to keep it in good shape.

grooveChuck - Correct. Bistrocity is the preset in looks. I played around with it a lot to make it less extreme for my b-roll shots, but that's where I started. I used colorista 2 for my primary CC. I've been thinking about trying Resolve though...

Resolve looks very good but requires a beefy graphics card. Bummer. It wont run on my i7 macbook pro. I like to use both Mac Pro and laptop for editing. That kind of makes it harder to be mobile.

I just downloaded resolve lite for my PC. I have a nVidia gtx580 and resolve still wants a second card for best performance. Haven't had a lot of time to try it out yet, but it looks like I need to watch a few tutorials before I can dive in.
