FAQ XVAC480 for F5 and F55 - any chance for FS7?

If it's less of a strain to decode and opens the possibility for smooth 60p playback in NLEs, I'm all for it.

I would look forward to something like this on the FS7. Probably have to stock up on a few 128GB cards to go along with it. At these bit rates, are we getting closer to a compressed RAW bitrate? I know it won't be a RAW file but the extra data might be nice to push it a bit further in post. Be cool to do side by side comparisons.

Who knows. Certainly a way to breath life into the camera and keeping it ahead of the pack instead of releasing an FS8

And not so long ago we were assured by Sony..that the F5 couldn't ever even shoot 4K.. now it can at 480 Mbps.. strange indeed..

Yep for all our complaints about Sony's business model they appear to have nailed it this generation, and given owners a decent chance to earn a profit before their gear is obsolete

Indeed. I even thought the F5 could come to end of life - and now it's on a much higher level.

The F5 started out life as a bit of an expensive misfit and has been upgraded to a very close second on the list of best value cameras available right now. If you bought the F5 at the start you may have a case that it's even better value than the FS7 over its life.

A secondhand F5 plus the new R7 recorder looks like a very tasty combination for that next tier of work above the FS7 level and could extend the life of the camera by 3 years at least.

I think it's unlikely Sony would give FS7 users XAVC480 just because they have to keep a differentiation between the F5 not because the FS7 can't do it. If Sony do bring it they may ask for a fee like they've done with the FS5 and the MPEG2 codec. Sony would have to prove to me XAVC480 upgrade would be better than an external ProRes recorder particularly in Skies and other flat areas.

I imagine next NAB is when you will see the real FS7 killers introduced by rivals and when its specs become the standard at that price point.

At which point if there's no FS8, and I've no reason to think there is yet, then dropping a great new feature via firmware to keep the same production lines churning out the same thing for a further year or two might be a very good idea.

If it is a paid upgrade If still go for it.

I wonder if there will be a sort of combined Fs7/F5.. there doesn't really seem a need to have both.. the Fs8 with side LCD.. F5 EVF options or similar .. more robust build.. maybe dreaming ! but either changeable or buyer option lens mount.. 16 bit RAW.. 480 XAVC etc.. but not global shutter.. that would still be for the higher end F55.. priced between the fs7 (which is too cheap) and the F5.. got to love it.. ?

I'd like to think the next gen would offer an FS5 level and then the FS7/F5 level combined with the F55 being higher end and just as much an F65 replacement too.

However, Sony do like to release 85 cameras at a time so...
