Xpress ProHD HDV editing

Currently I'm editing with the Adobe Video Collection in SD, I'm looking to upgrade for HDV. I can use Cineform AspectHD and edit in an intermediate format which requires considerably more bandwidth or purchase an NLE that edits HDV natively.

I read on the Avid website that version 5.2 edits HDV natively, is there anyone on this forum editing HDV natively and if so how do you monitor the HD during editing?

I don't personally have an HDV workflow, but according to the documentation you have the option of monitoring the HDV footage through the Avid Mojo. Mojo will down-convert the HDV to SD footage for display on any production monitor.

I know it's not a personal testimony, but perhaps it will help nontheless.

There are just things you love to hate about Avid - the fact that I have to purchase a "mojo" video card that costs almost as much as a G5 so I can downconvert to SD :undecided

I am hoping that a work around for this is just keeping my HC1 connected through firewire and monitoring the analog output from it.

Would it really be that hard for Avid to work with nVidia on say an FX540 so there could be a real-time HD monitor output for under $300.

Mojo is far from a video card and it provides many more benefits than just down converting HD footage. You should read up about it. It's an amazing piece of hardware that is definitely worth the price.

Sure, if your editing SD/DV. I have a Canopus DVRex RTPro that gives me a lot of real-time performance in SD. But all of the reading I have done so far regarding Mojo says that it doesn't do HDV. It downconverts the HDV to SD so you can view it on a SD client monitor. Hradly think that's worth an additional $1600.

Mojo may have some limitations but it has some great advantages too. Worth the price. I spent $1000 on mine. You can get them well under $1600 if you're a savvy shopper. The I/O configurations, 1:1 & 4:2:2 abilities are great. The Mojo's real-time processing power takes the load off your CPU and allows for client monitoring/color-correction. Plus you can use it to monitor the output of Adobe After Effects.
