I am using Xpress pro on a pc with two screens. Is there really no way of ordering the timeline, composer and bins so they will start up orderly and in my preferrred position each time. What is happening now is that every thing is on top of each other from start. You have to consider your self luckey if eg. the binns stick on the right hand screen after draging them there. Does it have to be this way? ;D I am new to Xpress pro. PLease explaing if you know. ;) ;)

Set up your screen config the way you want it, then choose Toolset from the menus and then choose "Save Current" then when you select the toolset in question it will default to where you moved the timeline, monitors, etc.

I'm having the same trouble, but mine won't save where I leave the windows. Every time I position them where I want (after 5 mins trying to move each box) I save and click on that setting to test it and they still all go back to the middle of my second screen.

So we're on the same line of thought, this is my process: I select basic from the toolset menu. I rearrange my workspace over my two monitors as I want. I then press save current from the toolset menu. I then go and click another workspace, and then back to the 'basic' settings from the toolset menu. But the basic setup again moves everything back to the centre of my second screen!

Help me! This is extremely annoying! If i could swear here I would! :)

Cheers, Phil

What kind of graphics card and what driver version? Not sure that this is graphics card related, but if it's the best theory I've got.

I'm not currently on the comp with Avid, but off the top of my head: it's a P3 1000 running Win XP, with an ATI Raedon 9000 (I think) graphics card. Drivers.... I honestly don't know. The accompanying CD has v7.84 but it has since been upgraded (late last year). That particular comp has become a dedicated editer so it doesn't have Net connection anymore. I was just freeing the computer of any unneccessary bits.

I need to pay more attention to my computer I think :)

I am fairly new to Avid (previously Prem, After Effects and FCP), could there be a simple feature I've missed? If not, can I turn this 'snap-to-centre' feature off!? Can I custom where the windows go by putting in my own window "co-ordinates"? Something else perhaps?

I used to have an ATI in my Avid box, but I switched to Nvidia a while ago. I'm going off of very old memories here, so forgive me.

Are you using the ATI utility to manage your dual monitors? Hydravision or something like that? When I had an ATI I initially set up dual monitors using ATI's utility and had nothing but problems with Avid. Very similar to what you're describing. I uninstalled Hydravision and just let Windows manage my dual monitors and then all was better.

So you might try that. Remove Hydravision, set up dual monitors in Display Properties of Windows, and then position the windows in Avid and choose Save Current. If that doesn't work, please post back, but honestly that might be my last idea.

Something very odd is happening with my setup.

This is what I've done so far... Firstly, the computer has Catalyst drivers. I remember now that I was told to use these over the Hydravision drivers, but it was never explained to me why. So the current drivers are 8.1 or something. I have uninstalled the whole ATI applications and drivers etc, and re-installed them. But i left out the display properties in the hope windows would do it for me. But I still have this 'save current' problem in Avid.

But I noticed something else (this was after re-install - not sure if it was like this beforehand or not):

I selected basic, moved the windows to my prefered place, and clicked save current. I then clicked on basic in the toolset menu again, and everything went back to the centre of the screen (and to my second monitor which is on the left of my desktop layout). But the Compose monitor did something strange, it saved itself in the position I wanted it, but was placed on the second monitor (instead of the first monitor on the right)

Could it be something about the graphics card not picking up my monitors properly? Did your new graphics card fix the problem you had? Should I follow the same path and grab myself a GeForce or something? This is really odd... not to mention quite frustrating.

Sorry about the long message, I appreciate your help!

It could be graphics card related, but honestly I can't say that with 100% confidence. When I had an ATI getting rid of Hydravision fixed my problem. I was able to save a window layout in Avid and anytime I switched toolsets my windows popped back where I put them.

I got the Nvidia so I could have better results with realtime DVEs in Avid, not because I was having a problem with the ATI.

Sorry I can't be more help. Have you been to the user forum at www.avid.com? You can search through the archives for this problem, or there are a lot of good troubleshooters over there. Maybe they have a suggestion.

Good luck.

try this:
from the project window, go to settings tab- from the fast menu choose "all settings", now look for "work space" . At this point you will want to make work space for , capture, edit , effects, audio, and what ever you want. To do this, click on the word "workspace" right click, and choose duplicate. Duplicate for every workspace that you need. Next to the word "workspace" rename that column, for example "1 capture", 2 edit, for next work space, etc. . By doing this you can use the Keyboard. F9 Thu F12, for you work space. so it should look like this:

workspace 1 capture
workspace 2 edit
workspace 3 effects
workspace 4 audio

once you have done all of this, arrange your windows the way you want, let's say for capture, double click on the word workspace, for capture, pop up window: select "activate setting linked by name" and "Manually update this workspace" then click "save workspace now"
do this for every workspace that you have.

hope this work.

I've managed to fix the problem. You wouldn't believe how stupid the solution was.

I had my desktop arrange so that the screen on the left was the 2nd, and the screen on the right was 1st. I did this because the screen on the right sits in front of me, and i wanted the start menu on that screen. To the right of that again is my monitor. The problem (how this is I don't have a clue) was that i needed to change the settings so the monitor on the left was number 1, then number 2 followed by the tv monitor.

How a simple solution can be overlooked... but even still that just seems rediculous!

It must have had something to do with the second screen being -1024x768, maybe Avid doesn't like working with negative screen co-ordinates?

Thanks for everyone's help. Much much appreciated:thumbsup: Cheers,

Phil
