xporting from Avid for DVDs and Color Space issues

I see a post elsewhere on the Net from DVXuser's own MichaelP wherein he describes the need to: "correct for 16-235 for digital cut and then export QT reference as RGB" when encoding MPEG-2's for DVD burning. I understand the issue: Avid works in a 16-235 color space, whereas a lot of other apps, including DVD encoding apps assume a 0-255 color space. The question I have is that I don't understand HOW to accomplish MichaelP's suggestion. How do I correct for 16-235 color space for digital cut and/or for QT reference export?

You shouldn't have to make any changes for a digital cut since the assumption is you are going out for broadcast standards which is 16-235. The issue is with some encoders that do not work that way and assume the program to be 0-255. If that is the case, when exporting the QT reference, select RGB instead of 601 and it will take your properly corrected program of 16-235 and evenly stretch it to 0-255.

You make it sound so easy! And turns out it is in this case. Thanks MichaelP. :-)

And surely Avid DVD (which transcodes MPEG-2 directly from the Avid program) is designed to work with 16-235 media.

Ok, so I went out and bought Avid DVD and I still am having color space issues.
-I am creating a widescreen dvd project in Avid DVD, so there will be black bars across the top and bottom of my frame. These bars apear to be 0-255.
-I am importing a quicktime ref. from Media Composer that I have masked to 2:35 aspect ratio. The black 2:35 mask I am assuming is 16-235 color space.
-So if I export the quicktime ref. as 601, I will end up with two shades of black bars.
-If I export the quicktime ref. as rgb, the bars will look perfect, but my picture will be to dark.

What do you guys suggest. I bought Avid DVD because I was sick of dealing with color space problems, but it seems to not fix a thing.

DOn't assume that the black bars are 16-235... title tool defaults to 0-255. Check them out in the color corrector with the eye dropper to see that they are 16|16|16.

ok 16/16/16, but what do I do to make them match the bars made by Avid dvd. What do you do when you have a mask?

great, thank you very much. I just created the mask in photoshop and imported it and it looks perfectly black.
