XP External Capture Help

I just got my new HVX camera and I'm trying to find out how to capture from the HVX directly to my Windows XP laptop or to an external firewire HD (thus bypassing the need for the P2 card) for now. Perhaps I am wrong to think this can be done. When I do connect my firewire to a XP machine (with PC Mode set to "1394 Device") or an external firewire HD (with PC Mode set to "1394 Host") I get the following error message when I press the HVX record button.

"External 1394 Disconnect"

Thanks in advance.

First of all, you can't record directly to an external hard drive. You can offload P2 media to an SBP2-compatible Firewire drive, but you must stop recording in order to do that.

You could bypass the computer and record to an external DV recording device like the Focus Enhancements FS-100.

Finally, you can record to your PC using Windows XP SP2 and a program that understands DVCPro50/DVCProHD such as Canopus Edius 4 Broadcast or Serious Magic/Adobe DV Rack 2.0 HD. Earlier versions of the Firewire drivers in Windows XP do not support DVCPro50/DVCProHD, so even if either of those two programs is on your system, you won't see the camera.

Another thing to look out for is the Windows XP ICF (Internet Connection Firewall). If the IEEE 1394-to-Ethernet network bridge is installed, you may run into problems with the ICF trying to filter packets from the camera.

Thanks for the help. I have Edius 4 and it seems to work fine.

Also, how can I be sure if I have a "SBP2-compatible Firewire drive" to transfer clips?

Plug it into your computer and check the System Tray -- there should be an icon with a green arrow that is used to safely disconnect the drive. It should report an SBP2-compatible drive.

I think you can also see the status in Device Manager, but I don't have an external drive here to try and confirm that.
