XLR port covers

Hi there,
I'm trying to get some info on those little plastic xlr port covers on my hvx200. One was lost on a recent rental. I know it's a minor thing, but I like having them.

If you know their exact name, where I can buy them, and for how much, I'd be a happy person.

Thanks.

You can probably get them from Spec-Comm, or directly from Panasonic's National Parts Cemter (800-332-5368 between 9:00 a.m. and 8:00 p.m. EST Monday through Friday / http://www.pasc.panasonic.com/Epartr/PartsList.asp)

The Panasonic part # for the XLR Cap is VJF1468, priced at $12.08 each. You should be able to pick up generic parts from any place that sells XLR cables.

...priced at $12.08 each.....

12 bones a piece....a little steep for a part that stays in the camera case most of it's life

I've lost mine too....but that's only because for just about every shoot I'm using both XLR jacks.

Is there any parts diagram that would help identify part numbers?

I have lost one xlr cap as well and thought about getting 2 to have a spare.

But I have also lost one of the screws in the microphone clamp assembly and looking at the parts list at Panasonic I can't tell one screw from another. I thought I would buy several of those as well as they can be lost easily if you remove that assembly often.

Before you stress out about these covers, think through and figure out if you really need them...broadcast and ENG cameras don't even come with them. Just something else to lose.

I guess you definitly need them, unless you dont want any dust to enter your cam..!
Its really not one of the powerfull parts of the HVX200(guess it was the same with the dvx..), but you can easyly fix it: get some plastic straps and connect them to the handbelt...thats easy and doesnt cost anything..12 bucks..ha!

I am willing to post a picture(or sell it to you..haha) but i guess everyone can do it...!

Mike McNeese,
Actually my Sony Beta SX DNW-7 came with XLR and BNC plugs and I used them regularly. In dusty and sandy conditions they are vital to keeping connections clean.

They stay on my HVX at all times... unless of course I actually have cables connected.

Let me guess, you are an anal retentive? ;-)

Unless you are shooting in sandy/dirty conditions, you definitely don't need them. I have several of them and they are just laying around but no, I can't ship them to you as they belong to my boss who owns the three HVXs here. But on my DVX-100A, I have never used them once I removed them. $12.00 ea. Oh brother, someone is getting rich off of selling those.

I have only used them once in a year and half and that was in a sandstorm. I also got grit into the lens barrel and that was far worse than anything. Had to pay to have it all manually taken apart and cleaned, was a real drag.

Best,

Dan

I really don't think it's being anal retentive. I think it's being smart. Whether it's my $5200 HVX or $45,000 Beta SX and lens I believe in protecting my investments. If that means capping off all unused XLRs or BNCs than that's what I do. It's no different from putting a lens cap on the front of a lens. You do it because it costs more to replace than the effort it takes to protect it. I believe when you pay for your own gear your attention to detail and care changes.

Hi, as a poor college student, I was looking to buy one of the caps for my huge investment, as one of the guys working with me lost one of them. 12 bucks seems a little steep for a cap, I was wondering where I might be able to find a generic one. Otherwise I will just have to not eat for a few says and use my dinner money to buy one.

Right when I got my dvx I stuck the two covers into the bottom of my case. I just find them a pain to keep on. Any harm in not keeping them on?

Just depends on what kinds of conditions you work and shoot in. For me, I leave them off usually because they are so easy to lose. If I shot more exterior, nature kind of stuff, I would definitely leave them on.

I've been in pro audio a long, long time, and of the bazillions of devices I've owned, used or rented, I've never seen one - not one - that had XLR jack covers. I just wouldn't sweat it. Really...

I just grabbed some twist ties and twist tied them to the handle, I'm going to test it out for a few days, but as long as I'm not moving the camera enough to make them make noise, it should be fine.

Okay thanks for the responses, as for now most of my shots are interior and usually I have something plugged in.

David

yeah. My top XLR cap keeps liberating itself. 12$ is a bit much. I'm thinking of making a mold off of the second one and making some back ups for replacement..
I get a little paranoid about any exposed areas on a camera and when dealing with sand, sawdust whatever I'd rather have the option of caps.
