XL2 vs. DVX100

What would I be gaining with the XL2 that the DVX100 doesn't have? They both shoot in 24p, does the dvx shoot in native 16x9? or is it stretched and look bad? Anything else you can tell me would be great! I realize this is the dvx100 forum so try not to be biased you dvx100 lovers!

Hello nho,

The xl2 is native 16x9, the dvx is not, so your 16x9 resolution should be better with the Canon. Another important difference is the lens. The Canon is interchangeable, the Panny not, and the Canon has 20x stock, so if reach is important, then it is. If you have some bucks for more lenses, the Canon has a nice wide angle and a manual zoom that most folks like. Form factor is pretty different also. The mojo factor has been discussed here in large detail, both cams have their fans.

If you search the board archives you will find more than you want.

I have used both before, and on the DVX, there is more control over the image and it gives a better image. If you like the shoulder mount design instead of handheld, then the XL2 would fit that better, but the XL2 gives more of an 'electric' and very sharp image. Also, the DVX shoots true 24p. The XL2 does electronic 24p. The low lux on the DVX is 3 and the XL2 is 7 so the XL wouldn't perform as well in low light, but, the XL2 has a -3db gain setting to reduce noise. The DVX now sells new for around $1800 and the XL2 is about $2300 ish.

Squeeze mode is very good on the DVX.
