Xl2 dvx Gamma comparisons from panny open house

I'm seriously considering the spx800 for a shoot later this year.. makes more sense than a sdx900 since I wouldn't need to rent a deck to load the tapes into my computer... if anyone here knows of a rental house with the spx800 and (eventually) a P2 Store, please let me know. Thanks.

iamloser is right ... Jan was explicitly comparing both cameras in their 4:3 modes. In that mode, indeed the DVX has a higher resolution. The XL2's resolution does increase in 16:9, but that wasn't being discussed. xray, your statement does seem to imply that you were just trying to bring out a negative about the DVX.
Not at all, I bring out the positive news for the XL2. Even that, Canon stated that the XL2 is a 1/3-inch 3chip. Not 1/4 -inch. Just try to bring in some balance in the pro-P2 or pro-Dvx story. I dont think you can have a problem with that.

The XL2 doesn't use all of the 1/3-inch CCD in the 4x3 mode. It crops it. Effectively making it a 1/4-inch camera in 4x3 mode.

balance would be better acheived with posts that make factual sense. im sure it was just a misunderstanding though. ..perhaps i read it wrong. in any regards, the XL2 is a great camera.. we can all agree on that.

Thanks for that Thisiswells....

Since Jan wont answer my question, I'll ask it open to everyone.

If you had the choice between getting an SPX800 or an HVX, which would you get?

Matt

..xray.. what is your point. not to be snarky, but jan is clearly comaparing the cameras in 4:3 mode..

your statement reffers to 16:9 with a corrective wording as if its information negates jans previous staement. when in fact it does not.

Well. She also is talking about the 16:9 mode "where the color kicks" .
So I can make the point that the XL2 has a higher resolution in 16:9 compared with the DVX. I even think that color and sharpness kicks in the XL2. So for the reality show shooting in 16:9 the XL2 rocks.

Jan:
"The DVX has more resolution than the XL2 in 60i in 4:3 mode as it is a 1/3" in 4:3 and the XL2 is about 1/4". So for the reality show shooting the 4:3, the DVX kicks. And even in 16:9 mode the color kicks"

Actually Jan,

I'm not sure if your correct on this check out this link below

View the forth question

It is my understanding that the XL2 is always been 1/3" CCD.

Thanks for the feedback though

Relax people negative or no negative I think it's all valid when bringing out a comparison. Jan jumped to the comparsion origanly when I stated that at 60i the XL2 provided better movement and picture quality. People get emtional for nothing, specs really won't always solve everthing.

Either way lets bring it back to the original comparison about Canons gamma Vs. Panny's.

Jan, or maybe any one else... it is my understanding that one of the differences between the SPX versus SDX is that it doesn't provide Panny's awesome gamma curves at 24P. Is this correct?

Also from DVinfo.net:
"DVX100A [effective pixels in 4:3] 380,000" . . . "XL2 345,600 effective pixels in 4:3 mode"

Aw ...dude... I never questioned this. I'm totatly ignorant when it comes to pixel comparsison at 4:3 in both cameras. My goal is to shoot at 16:9 not 4:3 seeing that I'm 24 and shooting for the future  One thing I do know is that in the PAL version of the XL2 (based on the same article you provided ...thanks) has 410,000 pixels when shooting 4:3.

I think also it's completely retarded to go to wars over companies, so don't get so defensive.

Thanks
Pete

Jan was accurate with her statement. This nothing to do with wars over companies, bro.
This has to do with being accurate of the purposes of the thread.

SPX800 actually adds NewsGamma in addition to CineGamma. Up until recently it didn't have 24p.
Now it does. They announced the SPX800 24p software upgrade earlier this year.

Read here: https://eww.pavc.panasonic.co.jp/pro-av/sales_o/news_info/ibc/118.html

Dude your a genius thanks for the insight  I assume that it's also a 2/3" CCD with native 16:9 too... right? Then, that's it...the camera at the right price range with P2. I guess then the question lies in "What are you paying for in the price difference of the SDX?"

Thanks again ...seriously

And you are totally right ... you can make such a statement. I'm sorry if it seemed like I was coming down on you about your previous statement ... it just seemed the way you presented your info hinted at some negativity.

It is important that all info is correct, regardless ...

The XL2 is indeed 1/3-inch chip, but only utilizes that size in 16:9 mode. In 4:3, it deactivates the sides of the chip, effectively using about a 1/4-inch surface size. So although physically, it is 1/3 inch in nature, its actual effective pixel count and ccd size usage is effected depending on the mode you are shooting in.

I decided to buy the XL2 over the DVX and don't regret it at all .... its a great camera. But shooting in 4:3 with the XL2, it seems slightly softer than the DVX in 4:3. Now 16:9 is another story ....

The tape deck.

It's DVCPRO50, not MiniDV.. more expensive since they aren't making a gazillion of them.
The least expensive DVCPRO-50 deck is like 8K--used--on eBay.

But with the P2 technology and firestore drives I can surpass this...correct? Or am I limited to just shooting DVCPro 50 with that cam? (don't want to digress off the topic)
