XL1S - Short Film (QT7)

Loki

Veteran
I recently just finished doing a new cut of my short film. This is intended to be shown in festivals. My previous running time was 30 minutes. I have cut 4 minutes out of the film, and trimmed it down so it moves at a brisker pace.

I would really enjoy some criticisms of this piece.

it can be downloaded here:

This REQUIURES QuickTime 7... as it is compressed with the new h.264 codec, which by the way looks amazing, and I was able to get 25min at a 400x225 frame size into 91MB.. not to shabby.. and it looks really goood.

a few things to keep in mind if you plan on watching this:

- I basically had no bloody idea how to use an XL1s at the time.. had no clue what Aperture was at that time.. or what depth of field was.. I knew by pressing the + button on the camera the shutter changed.. and it made things darker or lighter.. though that was the extent of my knowledge. Suffice to say.. my knowledge has grown leaps and bounds since I shot this..

so don't expect the greatest lighting... but other than that.. feel free to pick apart the lighting if you must

Enjoy.

EDIT: Now that Quicktime 7 is available for windows, I expect all those people that said they'd view this when it came out to watch... hopefully I will get a few more comments than I have current.

vive la h.264

Loki, Quicktime 7 is cool and all that jazz but the problem is that it's only available for Mac users and based on my Web stats, you've excluded about 80% of DVXUsers...

I would suggest you re-encode it for Quicktime 6

thanks :)

cripes... way to get my hopes up... 7 responses of nothing... bah

disjecta.... ever notice how many people download things that are over 200MB? pretty much nobody..

Using the new codec is the only way I can get the film to a reasonable size.. otherwise I would have a 200MB file.. and I don't have the storage for that... (I am sharing space for the moment... )

those 80% will have QT7 eventually..... all I really want is a few people to watch it... I got 2 replies the last time I posted this in the cafe a few months back... and none of the people that replied watched it cause the file was too big..

catch 22...

I just finished watching it and overall, I must confess I really liked it. The main actors were very good. Outstanding music! Very good atmosphere!

The few things I would have done differently, other than using a DVX100 (the XL1 really sucks nowadays) and have a real lightset, would be:

- Tighter editing: I would cut a few "non essential" shots. For example some shots from the supermarket, or from the TV "Dirty Cops". Also the chasing scene could be edited a little tighter to be more realistic.

- Framing could be different sometimes. Especially when she's watching TV: I would have put both the TV and her in the same frame, so the viewer is less distracted by the obviously fake (non pro) TV programs (I especially do have the "dirty cops" in mind) and focus on her emotions (or lack thereof) instead. This would also help with the rythm, from an editing point-of-view.

- I would have tried to make the TV shows look more realistic. First thing I'd have done would be to use a different font than the cheap one you chose and I would have it animated like what we see all the time on pro-TV. I mean, I would have tried to replicate a real TV show layout...

- The blood looks fake! Especially after she touched it. I don't mind using real blood (pig's blood with some strong anti-bacterial agent mixed in) for close-ups, it is so much more realistic than what we get with those "cherry juice with corn syrup and artificial red" kinda mixes.

Overall, it is a very good short! Thanks for submitting it!

Man, not to get off topic, but I'm really bummed I have to pay another 30 dollars to get quicktime 7 pro. I'm a quicktime 6 pro user, and really enjoy all this "pro" features I have, like saving a movie to disk... Jeez...

Thanks for the feedback on the film! it is nice to hear an objective view on the film for once.

as for qt pro.. I refuse to pay for it. apple is a cheap bastard... it should come with a pro computer by default.

that was ****ing awsome. i usually hate everything on dvx user and i loved yours and you didnt even use a dvx thats awsome. i like how you spent the first quarter of the film dedicated to mood by using intercutting that dreamish music and montage. and i like how once you got in the story we didnt leave it. all the film makers of that film did a great job. did you use 24 frame filter in after effects
