XDV 3.5.4 & DVX?

Hi there...
My DVX100AE finally arrived. I'm a very happy man :)
But the Avid Xpress DV 3.5.4, which I used to use for some other projects, doesn't seem to have the DVX100 as an option for the deck settings.
Is it just that I have to move on to a newer version, or am I doing something wrong?

Thanks...

DVX100 came in the 4.x release so you need to upgrade. The camera hit the market after that release. 4.6 is the latest release for Mac and Windows. V.5.1 is a release for windows at this time that allows output back to NTSC with no need for Mojo as well as capture of NORMAL pulldown directly over FireWire.

Thanks, Michael, for such a quick reply.
Do you think that I could use the v. 3.5.4 in the meanwhile, until finding the time & money to upgrade? Maybe with a 'generic' deck, or another of the Pana which already exist there, for capturing & outputing?

I would suggest you shoot 24P NORMAL or 30i pulldown and try generic template for deck control. That should work.

Then you are all set. Choose either progressive or interlace depending on your needs.

Was out of the Net for a couple of days... Sorry for the delay.
Where do I choose progressive, you mean on the Avid? Didn't notice such an option, to be frank -although didn't search for it, as well, since it wouldn't be of any use 'till now.
By the way, any ideas about how seriously should I take Avid's "Minimum Recommendations" for their systems? 'Cause, if they really mean what they write, I 'll be forced to upgrade my system, in order to upgrade to Xpress Pro...

Thanks again,

-Sotiris.

If the project type has a "p" in it, then it is progressive, if it has an "i" it is interlace. In PAL countries the frame rate is the same, but the progressive/interlace issue is a choice.

Minimum system requirements are meant to support the amount of real time streams and performance expected from the software. If you are happy with less real time and the system runs, then by all means use your existing system.

Did a quick search, but found nothing relevant (I think).
Where exactly does one set the "p" or "i" flag in XDV 3.5.4? And at what stage?
The only references I found in the Help file were about importing/exporting.
But nothing about digitizing, creating a project, progressive timelines, etc...

Uhm... Sorry, but the only thing I can select from that menu is either PAL or NTSC.
No reference to progressive whatsoever.
Could this be a fault in my Avid's installation, or is it just that Xpress DV 3.5.4, being as old as it is, doesn't support progressive timelines?
In any case, do you think I will encounter any problems trying to edit 25p footage in an interlaced mode? If yes, what these could be?

Thanks again for your patience...

Sorry, I just realized you have Xpress DV and not Xpress Pro so that explains the project types. No, you will have no issues with working in interlace projects and progressive footage. The only difference will be is that effects with edges such as wipes, picture in picture, etc. will be done on 1/50th when moving while a p project would do it as 1/25th. This is an issue when going back to film, but for video only work is not an issue.

Michael

So, that explains why I couldn't find these options...
Not going back to film, not anytime soon, anyway ;)
Do you think there's anything I should be extra careful about, when editing 25p in a 25i timeline?
You see, I am not sure that Xpress Pro will run on my PIII, 1GHz, 512 RAM, Dell laptop, which I use with XDV. According to Avid's system requirements it will not, but I'd like to verify it, since, even if slower, I'd fancy the capabilities Xpress Pro offers.
But then again, having just bought the camera and a good shotgun, I have no money left for a new laptop right now...
Anyway, enough ranting.
Thanks again for all your help, Michael.
