XDCAM Transfer 2.51 vs Log and Tranfer Utility 1.0?

Hi guys,

I'm going to be shooting a project soon on a couple EX3s. I went by the rental house to get some test footage to play around with in FCP first.

I'm wondering if someone can explain the difference between the "XDCAM Transfer for Mac FCP Version 2.51" and the "Log and Transfer Utility for MAC Version 1.00", both of which are listed on this Sony software page. They seem to fulfill a similar function - is one of them deprecated? Log and Transfer Utility seemed newer from how it was listed, but in its description they make reference to advantages of XDCAM Transfer.

Thanks!

I tend to use XDCAM Transfer but have not really noticed any bugs or other issues with Log and Transfer plug-in.

What is peoples workflow using xdcam transfer sofware?? Have own ex1 over 6 months and actually never used that program.

What are the advantages using this sofware? I have always just imported the bpav folder straight to my premiere pro. Should I use the software? What do you guys use xdcam transfer for?

I really push the use of the Log and Transfer plugin for FCP. Why?

With the transfer plugin FCP will keep track of all your logging. If you name a clip, create a subclip, or add extra information FCP will remember where that clip originated from. With the XDCam Transfer a quicktime file is created from the original data but FCP does not know where it came from or what it was originally named. XDCam transfer itself will keep track of this in an cache location on your drive.. but if you look at the same cards on a different machine then the logging data will be gone. The FCP project file will keep track of everything and if for some odd reason you deleted one quicktime file in your capture scratch bin then you could bring it back online like a tape. FCP will just ask for the card folder.

Premiere is editing the files natively so no need to use the import utility. I personally like importing the data as quicktime files though, because it creates an additional backup of my data that works very well on my Mac.

No problem. Personally I've never experienced problems using finder. However there is a copy verification mode in the Clip Browser that I really like. So I suggest using the Clip Browser when you have the time.

Also check out ShotPut from Imagine Products. There ShotPut EX does a verify copy to multiple locations.
