This is a confusing concept, but I'll try to describe:
My EX1 went in for a firmware update last month. I've shot quite a bit of footage both before and after the update.
Enter Adobe CS3 3.2.0:
There is a difference in the way audio is imported depending on whether you're importing the BPAV folder into CS3 directly, or rewrapping to MXF and then importing. And it seems to depend on the firmware version whether you'll get sound on the MP4 version.
Prior to the backfocus fix firmware update, the MP4 files recorded come into Premiere with no audio. The properties says there is 2 tracks of LPCM, but all I hear is a brief "tick" sound when I begin playback.
If I use Sony Clip Browser to rewrap these MP4 files to MXF, I get two mono audio tracks and they have audible audio in Premiere.
Now here's where it gets interesting...
MP4 video recorded AFTER the firmware update has audible audio when the BPAV folder is imported into Premiere. It imports as a single STEREO track on the timeline, just like DV audio.
Properties looks the same as far as the audio parameters are concerned.
As a secondary question, has anyone figured out how to get Sony clip browser to rewrap clips with STEREO audio instead of DUAL MONO audio? Or maybe it's an import option I'm overlooking in Premiere?
