XDCAM-EX SDHC card adapter now officially from Sony

So, what's the difference between Sony's adapter and those that are already out there and working that we are using? Is Sony going to put a huge price tag on it like its SxS card?

There should be no real difference but one thing is interesting about the announcement:

...The PMW-350, PMW-EX1R, PMW-EX1 and PMW-EX3 can receive updated firmware via an Internet download, ...
In other words: Sony allows users a direct firmware update without sending the camera elsewhere. It also seems everybody can download and install the update, no matter if you purchased the adapter. This update will most probably fix the issues with many other card readers and cards too. The price for the adapter should be around €80.

I'll buy it... I've gotten read errors before and rather would have something that is officially tested and confirmed working.

I'll buy it too as long as it is not way over priced compare to other readily available adapters out there.

So any time line when this will be out?

Let's recap: expensive but robust SxS - check. Moderately priced MemoryStick - check. Cheap SDHC - check. USB out for geeks with HDDs - check.

Class 10 means 10 MB/s or 80 Mbit/s, which is higher than data rate required for AVC-I @ 50 Mbit/s or DVCPRO HD at 24/25/30fps. It is Panasonic's turn now.

A little more pricey than I'd like to see, but quite fair. For those of us who like to have one adapter per SDHC card it's something of a bitter pill. But honestly, it puts a combo with a 16GB Sandisk Ultra2 card (1hr) at $150. Two of those in the camera for $300. The 32GB card is $100 so we're talking a $220 combo or for $440 you can have 4 hours of continuous 1080p recording. That is hard to beat.

We'll see if Panasonic is content to let Sony play in this space alone, or if they'll up their game to compete.

Yes it can record on 32gb, it does not stick out of the camera, I believe there is a firmware upgrade necessary but from what I hear, it is simple to do as Sony said you will not have to send in your camera (I don't remember where I heard this).

I'm kinda in a bind though... I'm exclusively in a low budget feature/short environment and I like the fact that I can record to a 8gb card and burn straight to a DL DVD for backup right after I finish with a card.

So I think I might go with 2 Sandisk SxS 8gb cards @ $150 a piece. I just need to verify that they're reliable.

Ok, so let me make sure I understand this correctly. I will have to upgrade to the latest firmware version so that I can use 32GB card, correct? Can someone tell me what firmware version is the latest? Where do I download the latest version?

Lor, in order to record to SD cards firmware 1.11_0531 or newer is needed. EX3 never needed a firmware upgrade for that. All cameras produced post August 2008 come with this update. There was never a limit of 16GB in the camera firmware. First generation MxR adapters had the 16GB limit with most of the memory cards (they worked with Transcend 32GB). The second generation MxR adapters (purchased within last 6 months) work with 32GB cards provided they are Class 6 or faster.

The firmware upgrade I was referring to is required to use the new Sony SDHC adaptor that I linked earlier. I'm almost positive one is needed to use THAT card.

Thank you for the response. So, that means I have to purchase a new MxR card adapter, correct? Can someone point me to working adapter card that will with a 32GB card?

And Sony's adapter card, does the firmware upgrade with the purchase of the card?

Lor,
If you are in US, you can order it from any dealer or our website. We only distribute the 2nd generation adapters good for 32GB SD cards.
